Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. They were the only club representing the former Yugoslavia to win the European Champions Cup, and they wore their traditional red and white stripes in their final victory over Marseille. Which club is this?

Answer: Red Star Belgrade

Red Star (known locally as Crvena Zvezda) were founded in 1945, and were champions of the former Yugoslavia 19 times, before becoming founder members of the Serbian League in 1992. Their greatest moment came in season 1900-91 when they defeated Olympique Marseille on penalties in the European Cup Final in Bari.
2. A number of top Spanish clubs traditionally wear red and white stripes, including which team who won the UEFA Europa League in both 2010 and 2012?

Answer: Atletico Madrid

Atletico Madrid were founded in 1903 and are traditionally regarded as the "second" club in the Spanish capital, behind the famous Real Madrid. They won their first continental prize, the European Cup-Winners Cup, in 1962, and captured Europa League crowns in 2010 (vs Fulham) and 2012 (vs fellow Spaniards Athletic Bilbao).
3. Which member of the French League, who reached the final of the 2003-04 UEFA Champions League, have a rather unusual shirt design of red and white diagonal halves?

Answer: Monaco

AS Monaco are members of the French League even though they aren't actually based in France. Founded in 1919, they won their first French championship in 1961. In 2003-04, they had a terrific run in the Champions League, eliminating Real Madrid and Chelsea before losing to Porto in the final in Gelsenkirchen.
4. Sir Stanley Matthews was one of the most famous players in the history of English soccer, and although he may be best remembered wearing the tangerine of Blackpool, he began and ended his career in the red and white stripes of which team?

Answer: Stoke City

Matthews made his league debut with Stoke in 1932, and, after serving in the RAF during World War Two, rejoined them when soccer resumed in peacetime. He was transferred to Blackpool in 1947, leading them to glory in the 1953 FA Cup Final. He rejoined Stoke in 1961, making his final league appearance in 1965 aged 50.
5. Nearly all the top teams in The Netherlands seem to wear red and white shirts. Which team, who won three consecutive European Champions Cups in the early 1970s, wear white shirts with a broad red panel down the middle?

Answer: Ajax

Ajax, from Amsterdam, were founded in 1900, and won their furst Dutch title in 1918. With the legendary Johan Cruyff firing in the goals, they won three straight European crowns between 1971 and 1973.
Interesting piece of trivia - when Ajax won the Dutch League in 2012-13, it marked the 49th straight season in which the championship of The Netherlands was won by a club whose main colours are red and white, since DWS Amsterdam won wearing blue and white in 1964.
6. This team dominated Greek soccer in the late 20th century and early 21st. Which red and white striped team from the city of Piraeus is this?

Answer: Olympiakos

Olympiakos were founded in the port city of Piraeus in 1925, and are by far the most successful club in Greek soccer. When they won their 41st title in 2014, that was more than all the other clubs in the country put together. Thye won their first title in 1931. They became the first club to win seven consecutive titles when they reigned supreme between 1997 and 2003.
7. Nicknamed "The Peoples' Team", which famous Russian club wear red shirts with a white chest band?

Answer: Spartak Moscow

9. Which Irish team, who play in red and white stripes, are unique in having won the national championships of both Northern Ireland and the Republic of Ireland?

Answer: Derry City

Derry City are based in the Northern Ireland city of Derry/Londonderry, and played in the Northern Ireland championship until 1972, winning the championship in 1965. Following a number of sectarian-related incidents during the worst of the "troubles" in Northern Ireland, the club withdrew from the (Northern) Irish League and played as a junior club until they were granted permission to move south of the border and join the League of Ireland in 1985.

They won their first league title in the Republic in 1989.
10. Copying their strip of red shirts with white sleeves from that of famous English club Arsenal, which Portuguese club were surprise finalists in the 2010-11 Europa League?

Answer: Braga

SC Braga were founded in 1921 but have found success hard to come by in a league dominated by the "big three" of Benfica, Porto and Sporting Lisbon. They changed their colours from green and white to those of their then-president's favourite team, Arsenal, in 1946, and a year later were promoted to the First Division for the first time.

They won their first major honour, the Portuguese Cup, in 1966, and enjoyed a remarkable run to the final of the Europa League in 2011, where they lost an all-Portuguese final to Porto in Dublin.
