Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This track is probably the most popular track on the circuit because it hosts the biggest race on the calendar. This 2.5 mile superspeedway hosts a 500 mile race every February, referred to as "The Great American Race". What track is it?

Answer: Daytona International Speedway

The Daytona International Speedway is located, fittingly, in Daytona Beach, Florida. The Daytona 500 is held every February, beginning the NASCAR season. Daytona annually hosted NASCAR again for a race on or around the Fourth of July annually until 2020, when that second race was moved later in the summer. The track opened in 1969.
2. This track which is 1.5 miles in length is the closest circuit to NASCAR's base in Charlotte, North Carolina. Every year it hosts the NASCAR All-Star Race and a 600 mile race, the only event to pass 500 miles. From 1999 to 2009, what American home improvement chain had naming rights to the track?

Answer: Lowe's

Lowe's Motor Speedway, later named Charlotte Motor Speedway is located in nearby Concord, North Carolina. The track sits beside a drag strip and dirt track, owned by the same company. The IRL held races there, but tragically left after three fans were killed when a tire was sent in to the grandstands during a crash.
3. This was the shortest track in the 2011 NASCAR season, measuring in at .526 of a mile. It's also one of the oldest being built in 1947, and NASCAR racing there since 1948. What track is it?

Answer: Martinsville

In the first-ever race at the track, only four cars saw the checkered flag. The track held 65,000 racing fans, and is well-known for its "paperclip" shape with tight corners. It was the shortest track during 2011 in NASCAR by 400 feet, with Bristol measuring in at .533 miles in length.
4. This track located in Alabama was popular with NASCAR fans as the longest track on the circuit in 2011, and home to "The Big One", a crash involving many cars. What track is it?

Answer: Talladega Superspeedway

Talladega is a 2.66 mile superspeedway in a tri-oval shaped format. An oddity at the track is the location of the start/finish line, as it is located halfway towards turn 1, past the oval and pit road. It has led to quite a few exciting finishes through the years.

The first NASCAR race held at the track was actually boycotted by many drivers due to tire troubles caused by the high speeds.
5. NASCAR visited three short tracks in the 2011 season. All three are located in Virginia.

Answer: False

Bristol Motor Speedway is located in Bristol, Tennessee, just outside of Virginia. Martinsville Speedway and Richmond International Raceway are located in the state.
6. NASCAR's second tier series, the Nationwide Series did something historic in 2005. They raced outside of the United States. Where was this historic race?

Answer: Mexico City, Mexico

The Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez played home to the event, a first for NASCAR. Martin Truex Jr won the first race. The track is special because the infield contains a baseball stadium, home of the Mexico City Red Devils of the Mexican Baseball League. With the long front straightaway, it also holds 1/4 mile drag races as well.

The Nationwide Series only held 4 races at the track before leaving in 2008.
7. What is different about Pocono Raceway than any other track on the NASCAR schedule in 2011?

Answer: It's a triangle

Pocono Raceway is known as the "Tricky Triangle" and is a 2.5 mile speedway in northeastern Pennsylvania. All 3 turns have different bankings and length, and all modeled off of other tracks. Turn 1 being from the old Trenton Speedway, turn 2 from Indianapolis, and turn 3 from the Milwaukee Mile.
8. This track in Sparta finally received a NASCAR Sprint Cup Series race in 2011 after hosting the Nationwide and Truck series for many years. What state is Sparta in?

Answer: Kentucky

The Kentucky Speedway is a 1.5 mile tri-oval located halfway between Louisville Kentucky and Cincinnati Ohio. The track had also hosted Indy Car races from since the facility opened in 2000.
9. Which of these 2011 tracks is the longest?

Answer: Auto Club Speedway

The 2.0 mile Auto Club Speedway is located in Fontana, California, just outside of Los Angeles. Scenes from "Charlie's Angels", "Herbie: Fully Loaded", and "The Bucket List", were filmed at the speedway which is popular with TV and movie producers. The 1.366 mile egg-shaped Darlington Raceway is in South Carolina and is nicknamed "Too Tough to Tame" because of the frequency of cars smacking the wall. Delaware is home to Dover International, a 1.0 mile concrete oval known as "The Monster Mile", and home to a horse racing track in the infield.

The 1.5 Atlanta Motor Speedway has no popular nickname, but is popular with NASCAR drivers for the high speed and side-by-side racing that happens at the track.
10. This one mile track is classified as only having 4 turns, but the back-stretch has a left hand turn halfway down. Fans enjoy camping and then watching the race from Monument Hill, located behind turn 3. Which track is this?

Answer: Phoenix International Raceway

PIR is located to the southwest of Phoenix, and is visited by all three of NASCAR's series. The track originally had a 2.5 mile road course that winded its way around both inside and outside the oval. That configuration was removed in the 1990s when the current 1.5 mile infield road course was built.
