Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What position did the first pick in the 2014 NFL Draft play in college?

Answer: DE

Jadeveon Clowney played Defensive End at the University of South Carolina. His college career is perhaps best known for his hit on Michigan RB Vincent Smith during the 2012 season's Outback Bowl. After Clowney was taken first overall in the 2014 Draft by the Houston Texans, he didn't have much of an impact in the team's turnaround, as he underwent a variety of surgeries, missing various games, until he finally ended up on Injured Reserve in early December.
2. Who was picked twelfth overall in the 2014 Draft, and proceeded to have a highlight-reel season that ended with his winning offensive rookie of the year?

Answer: Odell Beckham Jr.

Beckham Jr. had quite a few highlight-reel catches, including a truly ridiculous one-handed, fighting-pass-interference one against the Cowboys. If you haven't seen it, look it up. He ended his season with 91 catches for 1,305 yards and 12 touchdowns, despite missing four games!
3. Which of these quarterbacks was not picked in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft, yet started all 16 of their team's games?

Answer: Derek Carr

Carr was taken early in the second round by the Oakland Raiders, and proceeded to beat out veteran QB Matt Schaub for the starting job. While Carr didn't provide the turnaround they had hoped for, as the team lost one more game than in 2013, his performance was enough to give them hope for the future.
4. Which RB broke an NFL record by rushing for 100 or more yards in each of his first eight games?

Answer: DeMarco Murray

Over the last few years, Murray had built up a bit of a reputation for being injury prone, as 2014 was his first NFL season in which he played all 16 games. However, he not only played in all 16 games, he did so with an immense workload, with 392 carries! He ended the season with 1,845 yards, propelling his team into the playoffs.
5. Who was the NFL MVP of 2014?

Answer: Aaron Rodgers

Rodgers was the model of efficiency in 2014, throwing 38 touchdowns compared to only 5 interceptions. This was the second MVP award of Rodgers' career, after his first followed his stellar 2011 season. Unfortunately, in both of these seasons the Packers' year ended in heartbreak, with a 37-20 loss to the Giants in the 2011 season's Divisional Round and a 28-22 overtime loss to the Seahawks in the 2014 season's NFC Championship Game.
6. Which of these teams did not receive a first-round bye?

Answer: Pittsburgh Steelers

The Steelers, although they were the AFC North champions, only had an 11-5 record, and so couldn't match up with the Patriots and Broncos, both of which had 12-4 records. They were then summarily booted from the playoffs by the Baltimore Ravens.
7. On fourth and two from the Green Bay 32 yard line, with just over four minutes to play in the Cowboys-Packers Divisional Round game, Cowboys quarterback Tony Romo heaved the ball to Dez Bryant, who made a spectacular leaping grab at the one yard line... or did he? What was the final ruling, after the play was reviewed?

Answer: Incomplete pass, the ground knocked the ball loose

The refs ruled that Bryant could not complete the process of the catch, making the pass incomplete. This caused controversy in football fans everywhere, as some believed that the officials were right, while others believed that he made the "football move" of lunging for the goal line, and so the play should have been ruled a catch.
8. There were multiple people to blame for the Packers' blowing a 16-0 halftime lead in the NFC Championship and sending the Seahawks to the Super Bowl. Which tight end bungled an onside kick recovery late in the game to give Seattle the ball back?

Answer: Brandon Bostick

Aaron Rodgers threw a couple of picks in the game, including one to Richard Sherman in the Seattle end zone. The Packers' special teams unit fell for a fake field goal and let Seattle punter Jon Ryan throw a 19-yard touchdown pass to offensive tackle Garry Gilliam. To reiterate: the PUNTER threw a 19-yard touchdown pass to the OFFENSIVE TACKLE! After the bungled onside kick recovery later on, Marshawn Lynch ran for a 24-yard touchdown.

After the two-point conversion, Seattle had a three-point lead.

The Packers were able to tie it up to get it into OT, but the Seahawks won the coin toss, elected to receive, and marched down the field for the game-winning touchdown.
9. The Patriots like to use their running backs to pound the Colts into submission whenever the two teams play each other. Which one did they use in the AFC Championship game to the effect of 148 yards and three touchdowns?

Answer: LeGarrette Blount

In the Patriots' Divisional Round game of 2013, Blount rushed for 166 yards and four touchdowns against the Colts. In the Colts-Patriots regular season game in 2014, it was Jonas Gray who ran wild. He went for 201 yards and four touchdowns, again against the Colts.
10. Who won Super Bowl XLIX, and by what score?

Answer: Patriots, 28-24

Super Bowl XLIX was one of the best games of the season, and for good reason. Multiple previously unknown heroes emerged, including Chris Matthews coming from nowhere for a 109-yard, one touchdown game; however, the game was ended by another unknown player, Pats CB Malcolm Butler, who picked off Russell Wilson's final pass to seal the game for the Patriots.

After the season, the game was voted on NFL.com's "bracketology" as the best game of all-time, as selected by the readers.
