Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What position did Sandberg primarily play in his first season as a Cub?

Answer: Third Base

He played only 24 games at second base in his first year, then in his second year with the Cubs, Ryne switched to second base.
2. What year marked the first season Ryne played in a Cubs uniform?

Answer: 1982

Ryne first played in the Majors late in the 1981 season with the Phillies. Ironically, he got his first big league hit against the Cubs at Wrigley Field on September 27, 1981. On January 27, 1982, Philadelphia traded Sandberg and Larry Bowa to the Cubs for Ivan DeJesus.
3. How many runs did Sandberg score in his first season as a Cub?

Answer: 103

There were seven Cubs who had 100+ runs in the season.
4. Which player of the 1984 Cubs NL East Division championship team said this about Ryne as a great Chicago Cub: "If ever there was a Hall of Famer, it's Ryne Sandberg. He single-handedly carried the Cubs to the playoffs for the first time in 39 years. Ryne Sandberg is the Cubs?"

Answer: Rick Sutcliffe

Besides Ryne, Sutcliffe was a major contributor to the Cubs winning the division in 1984. After being traded from the Indians early in the year, Rick posted a remarkable 16-1 record with the Cubs and won the Cy Young Award.
5. In 1983, Sandberg became the first Cub to win a Gold Glove since which Cubs player did so in 1970?

Answer: Don Kessinger

Kessinger was the Cubs' shortstop from 1964-1975.
6. What was the most hits Sandberg had as a Cub in a single season?

Answer: 200

Ryne had 200 hits out of 636 at-bats, which posted a .314 batting average. This was during his MVP season of 1984. At that time, the 200 hits were the most by a Cubs player since Bill Buckner had 201 in 1982.
7. Ryne Sandberg was the only Cub who was on both the 1984 and 1989 National League Eastern Division Championship teams.

Answer: False

Rick Sutcliffe and Scott Sanderson were the other Cubbies who played on the two division title squads.
8. Ryne Sandberg was fortunate to have played with a lot of great players. Which of the following Cub greats didn't play on the same team as Ryne?

Answer: Derrick Lee

Lee joined the team in 2004. Ryne retired after the 1997 season. Sammy and Ryne were on the same Cub teams in the 1990s, shortly before Sosa became a phenom. Sandberg and Maddux were teammates during Maddux's early years with the Cubs, including the 1989 squad that captured the NL East crown. Palmeiro played with Ryne on the Cubs from 1986 to 1988.
9. How many total home runs did Sandberg hit as a Cub during the Cubs 1984 and 1989 postseason appearances?

Answer: 1

Ryne hit his only playoff home run in Game 1 of the 1989 NLCS against Scott Garrelts of the San Francisco Giants. That was the first night postseason game at Wrigley Field. Sandberg's home run came in the bottom of the 3rd inning as the Cubs cut the Giants lead at that point 4-3.

Unfortunately, that was the game Will Clark hit a grand slam off Greg Maddux as the Giants won 11-3. Clark was overwhelming for the Cubs to handle as he hit .650 in that NLCS and was the series MVP. The Giants beat the Cubs in five games.

But Ryne, too, had a great series as well. He hit .400 off San Francisco pitching.
10. In all of his seasons as a Cub, Ryne didn't play for which manager?

Answer: Dusty Baker

Dusty Baker managed the Cubs from 2003 to 2006, long after Sandberg retired in 1997. Jim Riggleman was the Cubs manager during Ryne's comeback seasons in 1996 and 1997. Jim Essian managed Ryne in 1991 after Don Zimmer was fired. Sandberg was on the Cubs team in 1987 when Frank Lucchesi finished that season as an interm skipper following Gene Michael's resignation.
