Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which great Rams' defensive end (1961-1974) coined the term "sack"?

Answer: Deacon Jones

David "Deacon" Jones is perhaps the finest defensive lineman to ever play in the NFL. He played with the Rams from 1961 to 1971 and terrorized opposing quarterbacks with his intelligence, speed and power. Jones reasoned that tackling a quarterback behind the line of scrimmage was just as disruptive to the offense as "sacking and pillaging" was to a city. Sacks didn't count as an official NFL stat until the 1982 season, but 173.5 sacks are the Deacon's estimated total. Jones was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1980. Fred Dean played on the defensive line with the Chargers and 49ers from 1975 to 1985; Joe Greene was a member of the Steelers from 1969 to 1981; and Jack Youngblood played defense for the Rams from 1971 to 1984.
