Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I quarterbacked the Dallas Cowboys from 1960-1968. Ironically, my final season was almost my greatest, throwing for 2500 yards with 21 touchdowns. Who am I?

Answer: Don Meredith

The others were Dallas QBs, but came after 'Dandy Don'. Merideth never went to a Super Bowl in his career, although the Cowboys did have the talent on their roster. From the air they had the likes of Bob Hayes and Lance Rentzel, then Dan Reeves and Don Perkins from the ground. Craig Morton took over the QB duties for the Cowboys in 1969.
2. In 12 seasons, this Hall of Fame coach won three Super Bowls with three different quarterbacks in Redskin uniforms. After a layoff of a few years with Nascar, he came back to the NFL. Who was he?

Answer: Joe Gibbs

Gibbs of the Washington Redskins, took the team to Super Bowl XVII with a victory against the Dolphins. They lost to the Raiders in XVIII. After finishing 11-4 in 1987, Jay Schroeder helped the team to a win in Super Bowl XXII against the Broncos. Gibbs' third win came against the Bills.
3. The famous "ABC's Monday Night Football" began in which year?

Answer: 1970

It began with the great Howard Cossell, Don Merideth, and Keith Jackson. Jackson didn't last, and was replaced by a seven-time Pro Bowl running back from the Giants, Frank Gifford, in 1971.
4. I was an eight-season Denver Bronco running back. In my second season in 1974, I led the NFL with 1407 yards rushing. In 1975, I sat out much of the season due to injury. I ran for another 1008 in 1976. That was pretty much it. I retired in 1980. Who am I?

Answer: Otis Armstrong

The others were all defensive backs. From 1977-1980, Armstong's rushing attempts were cut in half. Although he kept up with near four yards per carry, he didn't have the big season totals. Otis had 25 rushing touchdowns and seven from the air.
5. This powerful running back of the Chicago Bears in the 1930s, retired after the 1937 season to be a professional wrestler. Due to the scarcity of players during WWII, the Bears talked him into coming back as a tackle in 1943. In the season finale, and trailing the game that would clinch the division title, he was put in at fullback. In the last 15 minutes of the game, he carried the ball 16 times for 84 yards and a touchdown to win the game. Who was this legend?

Answer: Bronko Nagurski

Those runs in the season finale was the only time that Nagurski carried the ball in the entire 1943 season. The Bears went on to win the NFL Championship game over the Redskins, 41-21.
6. Which team in 1977 set a record for fewest points allowed in a season with 129?

Answer: Atlanta Falcons

The Falcons didn't receive much credit for it as they finished the season with a 7-7 record. All but one loss was by less than seven points. Leeman Bennett with a defensive mind, head coached the Falcons in the season.
7. This running back starred with the L.A. Express in 1984 and 1985. He joined the NFL as a punt and kickoff return specialist, and led the league twice in each category in 1991. He also set a record for career kickoff return yardage. Who was this eight-time all-pro Saint and Lion, who retired as an Oiler?

Answer: Mel Gray

The others were all kickers. After three seasons with the Saints, Mel found himself as a Lion from 1989-1994. His final two seasons were with Houston and retired in 1996. Officially listed as a running back, Gray carried the ball only 19 times in his career.
8. Cleveland's Jim Brown set a season rushing record of 1863 yards. The record stood for 10 years before the great O.J. Simpson broke it, and the 2000-yard barrier. Simpson's record lasted 11 years and was broken by which running back?

Answer: Eric Dickerson

Dickerson played for 11 seasons, and broke Simpson's record in 1984 with 2105 yards. This was after rushing for 1808 as a rookie the previous season. Playing mostly for the Rams and Colts, Eric retired as a Falcon in 1993, but not before going to the Pro Bowl six times.
9. With their first choice in the 1965 draft, the New York Jets picked Joe Namath. In the second round, they took another QB and Heisman Trophy winner from Notre Dame. Who was this quarterback who never threw a pass for the Jets?
