Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which quarterback led the Broncos to their first ever Super Bowl appearance?

Answer: Craig Morton

In Super Bowl XII following the 1977 season, the Broncos played the Cowboys only to lose 27-10. Number 7 Craig Morton was the quarterback. Hard to imagine anyone other than Elway wearing number 7 in a Broncos' uniform.
2. In the first 40 Super Bowls, which team made the most appearances?

Answer: Dallas Cowboys

The Cowboys had been to the big game 8 times, losing to the Steelers twice and the Colts. Steelers had been 6 times losing only once to the Cowboys. The 49ers had been 5 times, winning all 5. And of course, Buffalo had been to 4 straight, losing all 4 times.
3. The 2006 Browns are an expansion team.

Answer: False

Even though Art Modell moved the team from Cleveland to Baltimore following the 1995 season, the City of Cleveland and the NFL reached an agreement leaving the name and history of the Browns with Cleveland. The Baltimore Ravens were actually the expansion team on paper with their history beginning in 1996.

The Browns' history began in 1946 with a 3-year gap for the '96, '97, and '98 seasons.
4. Including the 2006 preseason and postseason, how many times could 2 teams possibly play each other?

Answer: 4

Two teams in the same division could play each other in the preseason, twice in the regular season and once in the playoffs.
5. Who led the league in sacks in 1981?

Answer: Sacks was not a statistic then

Sacks didn't become an official stat until 1982. Makes you wonder who really is the sack leader of all-time.
6. One of the most famous catches in playoff history was made by Dwight Clark of the 49ers in the '81 NFC championship game. The pass from Joe Montana began a dyansty through the 1980s. What was the name of the play that Bill Walsh sent in from the sidelines?

Answer: Sprint right option

Sprint right option was a play that Bill Walsh learned as an assistant under Paul Brown while with the Bengals. The innovator of the West Coast Offense, Walsh watched while his assistants have become head coaches, their assistants have become head coaches, and so on and so on.
7. Which of the following former NFL coaches, retired with the highest regular season winning percentage?

Answer: John Madden

With a .759, Madden had the best in the regular season. If you were to include playoff games, Vince Lombardi had the best. Don Shula had the most victories. Oddly enough, Chuck Noll had the lowest winning percentage of all 4 but has the most Super Bowl rings with 4.
8. Johnny Unitas finished his career with what team?

Answer: San Diego Chargers

After being sold to the Chargers following the 1972 season, Unitas played but 4 games with San Diego in 1973 before retiring following that season. Although he didn't play much his last year, a young rookie QB took advantage of being able to play with and learn from a legend. That QB was Dan Fouts.
9. Which of the following was drafted in the 6th round 199th overall in 2000?

Answer: Tom Brady

Talk about pulling a rabbit out of your hat. A virtual unkown his rookie year, Tom Brady played in 1 game attempting 3 passes with 1 completion while doing mop up duty in a blowout. An injury to Drew Bledsoe in 2001 would propel Brady to 3 titles in 4 years. Urlacher and Arrington were both first rounders, Bulger didn't go until the 6th round, but didn't play in the NFL for 2 years until the Rams picked him up in 2002.
10. From the 1984 to the 1996 seasons, the AFC never won a Super Bowl.

Answer: True

For 13 seasons, the AFC couldn't catch a break. Buffalo lost 4 in a row, Denver lost 3, and New England lost 2. There were only a couple Super Bowls that were close. Finally, following the 1997 season, Elway and the Broncos would snap the NFC streak.
