Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following players had the nickname of "Moose"?

Answer: Daryl Johnston

The other were all offensive linemen. The number 48 of Johnston was a 11-season career Dallas Cowboy from 1989-1999. He paved the way for the great Emmitt Smith. Primarily a blocking back, Daryl rushed for only 753 career yards, but did haul in 294 passes from the arms of Troy Aikman, Steve Beuerlein, and Rodney Peete.
2. This head coach was voted Coach of the Year in 1973 with the Rams, 1980 with the Bills, and in 1984 with the Seahawks. Although he never took his team to a Super Bowl, he was well known for turning dismal teams around in the right direction. Who was he?

Answer: Chuck Knox

All the other coaching greats listed won at least one Super Bowl. In 22 seasons, Knox took some teams to some great regular season records. In his very first coaching season in 1973 with the Rams, he took them to a 12-2 record, but lost in the NFC Divisional playoff to the Cowboys.

In 1975 with the same record, the Rams lost in the NFC Championship game to the Cowboys again. Chuck retired after the 1994 season.
3. Whose foot was it that won Super Bowl V for the Baltimore Colts with five seconds left in the game?

Answer: Jim O'Brien

At the Orange Bowl in Miami in 1971, the Colts downed the Dallas Cowboys 16-13 on O'Brien's field goal. After losing Super Bowl III, the Colts rebounded to win their first crown.
4. In the fall of 1989, and after hitting 32 home runs with 105 RBIs in the Major Leagues, this running back ran for 950 yards in the NFL. Later, a serious hip injury curtailed both careers. Who was this multi-sport player?

Answer: Bo Jackson

Jackson lasted only four seasons in the NFL from 1987-1990. His baseball endeavors were 'just a hobby' as he put it. In his final season of the NFL, he received his only Pro Bowl invitation. In the Major Leagues, he played from 1986-1994 and mostly with the Kansas City Royals. His only major award was the 1989 All-Star MVP.
5. Alex Karras was a defensive tackle who had a storied career. He was a 12-season Detroit Lion. After the NFL life, he took on a role in a movie named, "Blazing Saddles". What was the name of his character who punched a horse?

Answer: Mongo

Karras also co-starred in some children's features. He also joined the cast of "ABC's Monday Night Football". Blazing Saddles was a comedy which also starred Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, and Mel Brooks.
6. Who was the first receiver in either the AFL or NFL to catch 100 passes in a season, and did it in 1961?

Answer: Lionel Taylor

The others listed were all defensive backs. Taylor with the Broncos caught exactly 100 passes from the arms of George Herring and Frank Tripucka. Taylor went on to lead the AFL in receptions, five of the league's first six seasons. 1961 was the only season that Lionel reached triple figures in receptions. He retired after 10 seasons in 1968 as an Oiler, with 567 career catches.
7. Which 2005 NFL team began their franchise as the Portsmouth Spartans?

Answer: Detroit Lions

From 1930-1933, this NFL team went 27-16-7. In 1934, the franchise became the Lions and finished second in the NFL West with a 10-3 record. The West winners were the Chicago Bears who went a perfect 13-0 in the regular season. The Bears began their franchise as the Decatur Staleys in 1920.
8. In the second game of the 1978 season was the infamous "Holy Roller" play, where an Oakland Raider kept kicking a fumble into the end zone, and finally fell on it on the last play of the game to win for the Raiders. Who was this tight end which caused some major changes in the rule book?

Answer: Dave Casper

The others never played for the Raiders. Casper played for 13 seasons, mostly withe Raiders. In this particular game against the Chargers, who ended up losing 21-20, three Oakland players were involved in this 'botched' pass, fumble, and game-winning recovery. The other two were Kenny Stabler and Pete Banaszak.
9. At the beginning of Super Bowl I between the Green Bay Packers and the Kansas City Chiefs, the Packers' number one receiver, Boyd Dowler, was injured early in the game. The Packers then went to a little-used backup who caught only four passes in the regular season. Figuring that he wouldn't even play in the big game, this player partied all night before the big game. Not only did he score the first touchdown in Super Bowl history, he also caught seven passes for 138 and two touchdowns. Who was he?

Answer: Max McGee

The others were all offensive linemen. McGee was in his 11th of 12 seasons, all with Green Bay, and was used sparingly as a Packer in the season. His finest regular season was in 1961 when he caught 51 passes from Bart Starr for 883 yards and seven touchdowns. Super Bowl I was won by the Packers over the Chiefs, 35-10.
10. Which NFL team began its franchise as the Dallas Texans in 1960?

Answer: Kansas City Chiefs

The franchise ended their short three-season stay in Dallas with a 11-3 record in 1962 with the AFL. 1963 saw them as the Kansas City Chiefs, and still under the helm of coach Hank Stram. In 1967, the Chiefs represented their AFL against the NFLs best, the Green Bay Packers, in Super Bowl I, but lost the title game. In 1970, the Chiefs joined the NFL in the merger.
