Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Besides succesful careers with Grand Slams titles, Olympic Gold medals and the world number one spot, Venus and Serena Williams also share the same birthday. True or false?

Answer: False

Venus is the senior as she was born June 17 1980, whereas Serena was born one year later on September 26 1981. Both have had a remarkable career and contributed greatly to the development of women's tennis.
2. In Ethiopia, we find the sisters Tirunesh and Genzebe who were the first siblings in recorded history to have held concurrent world records in athletics. To top that, they have a third sister, Ejegayehu, who won a silver medal in the 10,000 metres at the Olympic Games in 2004. Who are these Ethiopian sisters?

Answer: The Dibaba sisters

The Dibaba sisters have been a strong force in long-distance running. Tirunesh won double gold in the 2008 Beijing Olympics and another gold four years later in London. In 2015 Genzebe crowned herself world champion on the 1500 metres in Beijing and also won a bronze at the 5,000 metres.

She also took over the world record at the 1500 metres, one of two titles (along with the 5,000 metres) that were in the hands of her older sister Tirunesh. Their brother Dejene is an athlete as well and they have a cousin, Derartu Tulu, who is also a two-time Olympic champion.
3. Three sisters, two Chess Grandmasters and one International Master. That must be the Polgar sisters. Which country did Judit, Susan and Sofia represent?

Answer: Hungary

The sisters were actually part of an experiment of their father Laszlo who believed that "Geniuses are made, not born". He was proven right as Judit is generally considered the best female chess player ever, winning games against famous male players such as Carlsen, Karpov, Kasparov and many others.

Her sister Susan was the first female to qualify for the Chess World Championships in 1986.
4. German sisters Lisa Ryzih and Anastasija Reiberger certainly do not have vertigo as they are both capable of clearing heights over four metres. In which discipline of athletics do they do this?

Answer: Pole Vault

A 4-metre high jump would be pretty impressive, so they both need a pole to clear this height. Both sisters were born in the Russian city of Omsk but represented Germany at international tournaments. Anastasija won a gold medal at the 1999 Word Indoor Championships and Lisa took the bronze in 2010 and silver in 2016 at the European Championships.
5. Kim Clijsters, a former number one in tennis, had a sister who also played tennis professionally but never became as successful as her older sibling. True or false?

Answer: True

Elke Clijsters became a professional tennis player in 2000 at the age of 15 but was never able to repeat the success of her older sister Kim. She won one ITF title (the level under the WTA) and had a career-high ranking of 389. She quit in 2004 because of a severe back injury.
6. At the 2014 Sochi Olympics, the Swiss relay team in biathlon was practically a family affair as sisters Selina, Elisa and Aita Gasparin all made the team. Do you remember what two sports are combined in biathlon?

Answer: Cross-country skiing and shooting

Biathlon is the difficult discipline in which rapid and precise shooting has to be combined with cross-country skiing over a certain distance. The Swiss team ended up in 9th place in the Olympic relay but Selina Gasparin won a silver medal in the individual race.
7. Another sibling trio that sticks together in the same team were the Saini sisters. In the seventies Rupa, Krishna and Prema were a dominating force both in India and internationally. In which sport were they active?

Answer: Field hockey

A hint for this question could be found in the word 'stick', the instrument you play hockey with. The three sisters were all successful in the sport of field hockey and defended the national colors together, hence the popular epithet 'The Saini Sisters'.
8. At the 2014 World Figure Skating Championships, sisters Cathy and Allison Reed both competed in the ice dancing discipline. What was special about their participation?

Answer: They represented different countries

Although both born in America, Cathy represented Japan together with their brother Chris Reed, while Allison represented Israel with her dance partner Vasili Rogov. Cathy obtained an 18th place while Allison only got to spot 30. Allison previously also represented Georgia at the 2010 Winter Olympics.
9. Competing at the Commonwealth Games, the World Championships and the Olympic Games, sisters Ellie and Becky Downie have defended the colors of their national flag with pride. But which country's colors did they defend?

Answer: Great Britain

The United States, Ireland and France are not part of the Commonwealth so could not be a correct answer. Becky, born in 1992, won gold at the uneven bars at the European Championships in 2014 and 2016 and at the Commonwealth Games in 2014. Together they took the bronze at the 2015 World Championships and got a 5th spot at the 2016 Olympics in Rio.
10. Tennis seems to be a productive sport for sisters. What is the name of Urszula Radwanska's sister who reached the final at Wimbledon in 2012?

Answer: Agnieszka

Both sisters were great junior champions as Agnieszka won the junior title at Wimbledon in 2005 and at the French Open in 2006, whereas Urszula won the title at Wimbledon in 2007 and ended the year as the number one. On the WTA level, Agnieszka reached the number 2 position in 2012, the same year she reached the finals at Wimbledon.
