Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The American sprinter Marion Jones, while saying sorry in a statement to the press in 2007, got all upset. What was she saying sorry for that caused her to be in distress?

Answer: For lying about her use of banned substances during her career

Marion Jones held a press conference in 2007 after admitting to the use of banned substances in the BALCO case. She openly wept while apologizing for her use of banned substances and lying to federal investigators, friends and family. Marion was a medal winner at the 2000 Sydney Olympics; she handed back her medals that she won at the 2000 games and her times were stricken off the record books.

In 2008 she was sentenced to six months in prison for her use of banned substances and her involvement in a cheque fraud case. Marion did try to restart a sporting career in 2010 in the WNBA playing for the Tulsa Shock team, though they waived her contract just after a year.
2. The German formula 1 driver Michael Schumacher wept after his race win in the 2000 Italian Grand Prix. Whose record did Michael equal that, when he was asked, had him so distraught in the after-race interview?

Answer: Ayrton Senna's total amount of race wins

In the past-race televised interview, Michael Schumacher could not control his emotions when he was asked if equaling Ayrton Senna's record of race wins meant a lot to him. Michael was soon weeping while his brother Ralf Schumacher and Mika Hakkinen were left perplexed at Michael's reaction. Ayrton Senna had been a idol and rival of Michael's and his death in 1994 at the San Marino Grand Prix has had a lasting effect in the world of Formula 1. Michael has never stated why he was upset during the interview but it is suspected that it was either equalling Ayrton's record or the death of the fire marshall, Paolo Ghislimberti, who was killed on that race weekend when a wheel had come of the Jordan car being driven Heinz-Harald Frentzen, hitting Paolo in the face and chest.

His death that weekend was the first since the death of Ayrton Senna at any Formula 1 race event.
3. The Quarterback Brett Favre struggled with emotions during one interview at the Green Bay Packers. What reason had the press been gathered to hear about?

Answer: He was announcing his retirement from playing football

Brett had gathered the press together in March 2008, while playing for the Green Bay Packers, to announce his retirement from the NFL. After such a successful career being upset is understandable, though these tears later on came to be seen as crocodile tears -- it emerged that Brett had been in contact with the New York Jets regarding playing for them.

He went on to play for New York Jets in the 2008 season again towards the end wanting to retire. He was retired by the Jets and then went on to play for the Minnesota Vikings between 2009 and 2010 announcing that it would be his final season. Third time lucky was the charm for Brett Farve as he officially filed his retirement papers with the NFL in January 2011.
4. After winning the 2006 British Open, Tiger Woods could not contain his emotions. What reason was the cause for him to be so upset?

Answer: It was the first major he won after the death of his father just two months earlier

After sinking his last putt at the 2006 Open held at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club, Hoylake, Tiger Woods was unable to hide his tears. It was his first victory in one of golf's major tournaments since the death of his father, Earl Woods, in May of that year.

It was also his first major win that his father had not witnessed and, with it being only 2 months since his death, the tears that could be seen by the televised press was clearly understandable. He finished that Open Championship two shots clear of fellow American Chris DiMarco and 5 shots ahead of the South African Ernie Els. Tiger would follow up this victory by claiming the next major, which was the 2006 PGA Championship.
5. At the world cup tournament, Italia 1990, the English footballer Paul Gascoigne was seen by the TV cameras to be in floods of tears during the semi-final match. What had happened to Paul during the match to cause him to be so upset?

Answer: He had been shown a yellow card, meaning he would miss the final if England progressed

During England's semi-final match against Germany Paul Gascoigne received a yellow card. It was his second yellow card during the knockout stages of the World Cup in Italia 90. This meant, if England had beaten the German side, Paul would not have be eligible to play in the final due to those two bookings.

The TV cameras captured the England captain, Gary Lineker, signalling to the bench to keep an eye on Paul but by this time it was too late and he was seen sobbing by the TV cameras. He came back to England after the World Cup in 1990 to find himself a national star, but this had some adverse effects on Paul as he has struggled with alcoholism on and off the field.
6. The Portuguese footballer Cristiano Ronaldo, at the final of Euro 2004, tried to hide his head so not to show his tears. What had happened to cause one Portugal's best exports to be so upset?

Answer: Portugal had been beaten in the Euro 2004 final

Cristiano Ronaldo was captured crying by TV cameras after his Portuguese team was beaten 1-0 by Greece in the Euro 2004 Final. It was the second time they had been beaten by the Greeks as they had met them previously in the group stages. While he was crying his team mates and the manager Luiz Felipe Scolari tried to console him.
7. At the 2004 Olympics in Athens, the British long distance runner Paula Radcliffe was captured on TV being inconsolable. What had reduced her to tears?

Answer: She had pulled out of her marathon event with about 6km left to the finish

At the 2004 Athens Olympics, Great Britain had expectations of its runner Paula Radcliffe bringing home the gold medal in the marathon. With less than 6km left to the finishing line she pulled up at the side of the road visibly crying and unable to continue. She held an interview with the BBC not long after and was still upset at having to pull out and could not offer a reason that would at least satisfy her, as to why she found it so hard this time round. She came in for some grief from some aspects of the British press for not finishing the race.

Paula's run of bad luck continued when it came to Olympic competitions over the years but she was still went on to success in other marathon events. She was a three time winner of the New York and London marathons and a one time winner in the Chicago marathon.
8. At the 1982 World Snooker Championships, the Northern Irish snooker player Alex Higgins struggled to keep his emotions in check. What had he done to leave him in an emotional state?

Answer: He had just won the final of the World Snooker Championship

Alex "Hurricane" Higgins defeated Ray Reardon in the finals of the 1982 Snooker World Championship with a score of 18-15 to claim his second World Championship title. After receiving the trophy he summoned his wife and baby to the floor of the Crucible theater and started to cry while holding both his baby and trophy.

His type of playing style earned him the nickname of the "Hurricane". Alex's nature caused problems for him on and off the table. His type of fast potting helped to inspire fellow players and the former six time World Champion Steve Davis, once stated that Higgins was "the only true genius snooker ever had".
9. The Australian cricketer Kim Hughes, in this interview, was struggling to hold back the tears. He was so overcome he got up and left the interview unfinished, passing his statement to a member of Aussie team. What reason did he have for his distress?

Answer: He was resigning the captaincy of the Australian cricket team

Kim Hughes gathered the press to announce his resignation of the captaincy for the Australian cricket team on the 26th November 1984. While trying to read the letter, Kim became emotional and left the interview, handing his statement to the team manager Bob Merriman.

His reaction wasn't seen as a very Australian thing to do by the majority of the Aussie press and he came in for some criticism. Despite being remembered for his tears, Kim over his career in Test cricket hit 9 centuries and had 22 spells at the crease with over 50 runs batted, with a career best of 213 runs in a single Test match.
10. The British sprinter Derek Redmond was upset after crossing the finishing line in the 1992 Olympics at Barcelona, with assistance. Who helped him to finish his event?

Answer: His father ran on the track to aid his son who sustained an injury

In the 1992 Olympic semi-finals for the 400m sprint Derek was unknowingly about to take part in one of the iconic moments in Olympic history. As Derek was running down the back straight he tore his hamstring. Despite being in agony and through the tears of pain he got up and decided to finish the race.

His father then went onto the track to help him finish the race, despite officials trying to stop him. As any parent will tell you if your child, no matter how old they are, is in pain nothing will stop you trying to help them.

The pair of them left the track together after crossing the finishing line to a standing ovation from crowd. This moment of Olympic history was also used by Visa in one of the television adverts, narrated by Morgan Freeman.
