Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. I am a legendary Dutch skater who lost the European championships, claiming I fell over some bird-droppings. Who am I?

Answer: Hilbert van der Duim

Hilbert van der Duim was legendairy and not only for his achievements. He has lost 'sure' championships making mistakes like forgetting to change lanes, or falling over bird-droppings.
2. As a lot of famous speed skaters, I was born Dutch. I however took on the French nationality so I could continue my career when the competition in The Netherlands got too fierce. What is my name?

Answer: Hans van Helden

In any sport as you grow older, the young ones tend to catch up with you and eventually become better than you. When Hans van Helden was no longer one of the top skaters in Holland, he decided to compete for France. Years later Bart Veldkamp made a similar move: he moved to compete for Belgium.
3. I am an American speed skater who won many sprint tournaments in the 90s, but never seemed to succeed at the Olympics, until my very final race. Can you guess my name?

Answer: Dan Jansen

The American Eric Heiden was unbeatable in the early 80s, as he could sprint and do the long distance races. Jeremy Wotherspoon is a well known Canadian sprinter.
4. In women's speed skating, the German contestants have been superior in the past decades. I however became, 'Queen of Calgary' in 1988. What is my name?

Answer: Yvonne van Gennip

Yvonne van Gennip from Haarlem, The Netherlands, always lost against the skaters from Eastern Germany. Just before the Olympics in 1988 she got injured and was forced to take a rest. The rest worked miraculously. Free of all worries and expectations, she brought the Dutch to heights, beating Karin Kania three times at the Olympics in Calgary.
5. I am a tiny Japanese sprinter who took many a title on the 500 metres, but in the world championships 500m in Berlin 2003, was beaten by Jeremy Wotherspoon. What is my name?

Answer: Hirujashu Shimizu

Answer: Anni Friesinger

Brother Jan competes internationally too. The younger sister may be a talent for the future. Friesinger's biggest rival is Claudia Pechstein, who in crucial races like the Olympics, tends to be more successful. Monique Garbrecht is a sprinter. Karin Kania was successful in the 80s.
7. I am a Canadian speed skater, who used to play ice hockey. When I didn't make the Olympics, I decided to opt for speed skating. Who am I?

Le May-Doan is a Canadian speed skater as well. Tonny de Jong is a former champion of Dutch origin, who moved to Canada. Jennifer Rodriguez is from the United States.
8. At a young age I won many European and World Championships, but as I grew older my success diminished. I have no connection to the brandname for skates, even though we share our name. Who am I?

Answer: Falko Zandstra

Falko Zandstra tried and tried but never became as successful as he was before. Rintje Ritsma took the reigns and until now was a successful speed skater. Leo Visser, former champion, became an airline pilot, while Bart Veldkamp competed for Belgium.
9. The Dutch, as soon as the temperatures drop, they start dreaming of a 200 kilometres long skating event, that will take thousands of people on skates across the province of Friesland. I am therefore not a person, but a race. What am I called?

Answer: Elfstedentocht

Although it is a marathon ride, and also perhaps meant for lunatics, more people want to compete than is possible to let skate at one time. Alas the waters are not frozen over every year or every few years, so the Dutch have to wait patiently each winter for a period of severe cold.
10. I am a Dutch skater who used to ride marathons. Shortly before the 2002 Olympics, I decided to compete on the long distance race of 5 kilometres. I injured myself severly after winning a medal by jumping up and down at the party at the Holland House. Who am I?

Answer: Greta Smit

All four still competed in 2003. Jenita, who is a former marathon skater as well as her sister, started competing in the 5 kilomtres races as well.
