Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the sport of darts, what is a "nine darter"?

Answer: A perfect game

A "nine darter" is a perfect score of just nine throws in competitive darts to finish a game score of 501 points. It's the equivalent of a perfect game for a baseball pitcher or a 300-game in bowling. A nine darter comes about when a player gets 180 points (3 throws) in the first turn, 180 points (3 throws) in the second turn, and then 141 points (3 throws) to finish the game.

The most common way to finish this superlative result is to throw triple 20s (60 points), triple 19s (57 points) and double 12s (24 points).

A nine darter is extremely rare in world-class darts due to the pressure which comes with each successive throw. A televised nine dart finish normally warrants front page coverage in the sports section.
2. In the sport of bocce, what is the name of the small target ball?

Answer: The pallino

Bocce (or bocce ball) is played with eight large balls and one small target ball called the pallino (or pallina). The object of the game is to roll one of the large balls as close as possible to the pallino. Each team gets to throw four large balls at the target. If you want to hear some heated arguments, you are cordially invited to watch a game of competitive bocce.
3. If you need information from the Federation Internationale d'Escrime (FIE), which sport are you probably interested in?

Answer: Fencing

The FIE (International Fencing Federation) is the world governing body in the sport of fencing. The FIE was founded in 1913 and is located in Lausanne, Switzerland. It has over 130 nations under its umbrella and is responsible for enforcing the rules in the various forms of the sport; foil, epee, and sabre.
4. In the Olympic track and field games, how long is a steeplechase race?

Answer: 3000 meters

An Olympic steeplechase is a relatively short but grueling event. Competitors must run and jump for 3000 meters. Along the way, the athletes must jump over 28 barriers (high hurdles) and 4 water jumps. A steeplechase race normally consists of seven laps. Top male athletes can usually cover the course in about eight minutes. Moses Kiptanui of Kenya is credited with being the first athlete to break the eight-minute barrier, in August 1995, with a time of 7:59.
5. In the sport of badminton, what is a "high clear"?

Answer: A defensive shot which goes to the opponent's backline

Badminton is an action packed grueling test of speed and stamina. Several different types of shots are necessary to win a high level game of badminton. One such weapon is the high clear. A high clear is a high defensive shot which goes deep into the opponent's back court.

It is similar in strategy to a defensive lob in tennis. An effective high clear can buy you a little time as you scramble to get back into an attacking position on the court. A shot which barely lands over the net is called a "drop shot".
6. The MacRobertson Shield tournament is held in which wicket sport ?

Answer: Croquet

Top sportsmen in the game of croquet hit a ball through a small wicket. Top players compete in the MacRobertson Shield tournament which is held approximately every four years. The competition takes place among four nations, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States.

The first Shield was held in 1925. The tournament is named after Sir Macpherson Robertson, an ardent croquet player from Australia.
7. In the sport of team handball, how many players are allowed on the court for each team?

Answer: 7

Team handball is an exciting, high scoring sport played by teams of seven athletes per side. Each team is allowed to have five substitutes on the bench. A sub may enter the game at any time as long as the departing player has already left the court. Team handball is played on a court which measures 20 meters by 40 meters. Only the goalie is permitted to stand in the crease area in front of the net at each end of the court.
8. When people speak about a "fronton" and a "cesta", to which sport are they referring?

Answer: Jai alai

Jai alai originated in the Basque region of Spain, so most of the sport's terms are from the Spanish language. It is a fast moving sport which is played in a three-walled arena called a fronton. Players attempt to catch and throw a ball ("pelota") with their cesta, or basket. Jai alai is extremely popular as a betting sport in states such as Florida in the USA.

A jai alai match can take place either with single players, or teams of two competitors on each side. Taekwondo is a Korean martial art form, and jujutsu comes from Japan.
9. The National Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame is located in which Midwestern U.S. state, known for its "show me" attitude?

Answer: Missouri

The NHP Hall of Fame is located in Wentzville, Missouri, about 40 miles from the city of St. Louis. It was started in 1966 and has more than 100 inductees. Missouri is called the Show Me State because of the supposedly skeptical attitude about life of its residents. Kansas is the Sunflower State and Nebraska is the Cornhusker State. Illinois is known as the Land of Lincoln. Evidently, horseshoe pitching is a popular sport in the Midwestern part of the USA.

In this sport, players attempt to pitch a horseshoe close to or around a metal stake in order to accumulate points.
10. Which one of these sports is not included in the modern pentathlon?

Answer: Wrestling

The modern pentathlon is a fascinating athletic competition which includes five completely different disciplines such as fencing (epee), a 200-meter swimming race, air pistol shooting, show jumping (horseback riding), and a 3-kilometer cross country race. Athletes seek to win as many points as possible during a one-day competition.

The pentathlon was developed by Baron Pierre de Coubertin and became an Olympic event in 1912. Wrestling is not included in the modern pentathlon.
