22. Par in golf is the number of strokes a scratch or zero handicap player is expected to make to get a ball in the hole. Most professional golf courses are constructed to a certain 18 hole par. What is the most common par for such a course?

From Quiz Par For The Course

Answer: 72

Par is usually determined by distance. Most golf holes are usually a par-four with some having pars of three and five. A par-six is rare and a seven even rarer. Most professional golf courses are designed around a par of 72, consisting of four par-threes, ten par-fours, and four par-fives. Pars of 69-73 are acceptable. There is no absolute standard or requirement. Where there is a shortage of land, courses will be labelled as "three-par" where the majority of holes, if not all have a par of three making a course with a par as low as 54 possible.

23. Although the skill of gliding had been known since the mid 1850s, it wasn't until after World War I that it really developed. In which penalised country in particular was this?

From Quiz Mixed Sports Medley

Answer: Germany

The harsh terms that the Treaty of Versailles imposed on Germany following that country's defeat in World War I ironically led to Germany developing and manufacturing state-of-the-art gliders. This was because the treaty imposed very stringent guidelines on Germany's manufacture of powered heavier than air machines. So while the rest of the world concentrated on developing powered craft, the Germans powered ahead with developing gliders. Gliding, which is also known as soaring, is the skill of directing completely unpowered aircraft by using currents of air to stay aloft for as long as desired. Gliders are usually launched initially though by being towed up to the heavens by a powered craft and then released when the desired height has been reached. How serene and quiet it must be to be floating through the skies after that disconnection. Skilled pilots are known for staying up there like birds for over 1,000 kilometres. Quite amazing.

24. The 100-metre dash is one of the most exciting races in all of sports. In 1988 an athlete from the USA smashed the women's world record when she posted a time of 10.49 seconds. Who was this speedy lady who tragically died at the age of 38 in 1998?

From Quiz Getting Ahead of Time

Answer: Florence Griffith Joyner

Florence Griffith Joyner's record-setting time of 10.49 seconds was run in Indianapolis on July 16, 1988. Her time was .27 seconds faster than the prior world record holder, Evelyn Ashford. The International Association of Athletics Federations (IAAF) will allow a world record to stand only if the wind speed is measured at less than 2.0 metres/second (m/s) as measured by an anemometer. Controversially Florence Griffith Joyner's anemometer registered a 0.0 m/s wind speed when a nearby event registered a 4.3 m/s wind speed. Even so, Florence Griffith Joyner ran two other times in 1988 that were well below the prior world record that were not controversial due to possible wind assistance.

25. On October 12, 1989, two National Football League teams swapped a total of 18 players in a mid-season deal that sent which superstar running back from Dallas to Minnesota?

From Quiz Why Me?

Answer: Herschel Walker

Walker, coming off the best season of his career, was traded by Dallas to Minnesota along with two third round draft picks, a fifth round pick and a 10th round pick. Minnesota sent back five players (David Howard, Jesse Soloman, Issiac Holt, Darrin Neslon and Alex Stewart) and eight draft picks. (Three first round picks, three second round picks, a third round pick and a sixth round pick.) One of those picks turned out to be Emmett Smith, who would go on to become the NFL's all-time leader rusher. To add insult to the trade, Walker would eventually return to Dallas as a free agent several years later.

26. Pierluigi Collina was regarded by many as one of the greatest, if not the greatest, association football referees of the late 1990s and early 2000s. In which country was Collina born?

From Quiz In The Middle

Answer: Italy

Born in Bologna, Italy in 1960, Pierluigi Collina began refereeing in the late 1970s after a short stint as a defender. His rise through the Italian domestic leagues was rapid and within a few years the man with the iconic bald head was regularly officiating difficult games in Serie A. His progression didn't stop at the top of the Italian game of course as he soon found himself in the European and international arenas, officiating at tournaments such as the UEFA Champions League and the FIFA World Cup. Collina reached the very top of the European club game in 1999 when he officiated at the incredibly memorable UEFA Champions League final in Barcelona featuring Manchester United and Bayern Munich. With the regular ninety minutes played, the German side were leading 1-0 and looked all but certain to lift the trophy; the next few minutes turned out to be the most incredible in the history of European football with Manchester United scoring not one but two goals. What made this event historic was that it was the first time that an English side had managed to complete the treble (winning the English Premier League, English FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League for a specified season). In 2002, Collina went as far as a football referee can go when he officiated at the FIFA World Cup final where Brazil defeated Germany by two goals to nil in Yokohama, Japan.

27. How is the term "shut out"commonly used in horse racing?

From Quiz Shut Out

Answer: when wagerer gets to the window too late to place a bet

Any horse player knows the sinking feeling of being "shut out" when standing in line as the bell sounds, the window slams down, and no more bets are allowed. Of course the degenerate gambler always tells the story of how he had the longshot in the race which would have paid off big, and couldn't get his bet down because some novice was fumbling around in front of him in the queue.

28. NBA: This father son duo both spent years playing professional basketball. Along the way the son became the first to ever play for his father as a head coach in the league.

From Quiz The Son Also Rises

Answer: Doc/Austin Rivers

When Doc Rivers was coaching the Boston Celtics he faced off against his son Austin, who was playing for New Orleans. That game was played in Jan. 2013. Two years later the pair would unite with the Los Angeles Clippers. Doc was hired as the head coach, and in Jan. 2015 Austin was traded to the team. Jeffrey is Michael Jordan's middle name, not his son. The other's weren't basketball playing duos.

29. According to IAAF (International Association of Athletics Federation) regulations, how much should a men's javelin weigh?

From Quiz In Flight

Answer: 800g

A spear has always been used by primeval hunters to catch food or as an offensive weapon in war, but the sport of throwing a javelin dates back to the ancient Olympic Games in Greece. The aim of winning at javelin is simple. The longest throw of the competition wins provided the tip of javelin lands first down into an allotted 29 degree sector. The men's javelin should weigh 800g and the women's 600g.
