Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "We must have had 99 percent of the match, it was the other _______ percent that cost us," is attributed to Dutch soccer great Ruud Gullit, but how much was the missing percentage that he was talking about?

Answer: Three

Gullit had a glittering playing career, as midfielder for PSV, AC Milan, Sampdoria and Chelsea, followed by a not so glittering managerial career with Newcastle United, LA Galaxy and Terek Grozny. He is a renowned TV pundit, and obviously less renowned as a mathematician.
2. "The drivers have one foot on the brake, one on the clutch and one on the throttle." Which motor sports commentator got confused about the number of lower limbs a Formula One driver has?

Answer: Bob Varsha

Varsha was a good athlete in his college days, excelling at cross country and track events before commentating on a 10k run in Atlanta for TBS. He then began motor sports commentating and as well as F1, has commentated on Champ Car, World Rally Championship and Formula E. Murray Walker was the UK's voice of motor sport and is well known for his commentary gaffes.
3. "I want to rush for 1,000 or 1,500 yards, whichever comes first." said New Orleans Saints running back George Rogers. But which was his alma mater, who according to their website "have an outstanding program of mathematics teaching?"

Answer: University of South Carolina

Rogers was the first overall pick in the 1981 NFL Draft, and set a record for rookies by rushing 1674 yards. After the Saints, he joined Washington Redskins, with whom he won Superbowl XXII in 1987 before retiring.
4. Controversial basketball star Dennis Rodman said " __________ is a class you take in high school or college, where you figure out two plus two is 10, or something." Which was the class?

Answer: Chemistry

Dennis Rodman - professional wrestler, actor, U.S. diplomat to North Korea, seducer of Madonna, quite possibly the best rebounding forward in NBA history, Is there anything this man can't do? Oh yeah - basic arithmetic, judging by the question.
5. In the 1993-94 season, basketball's Dallas Mavericks recorded 20 consecutive losses in a dismal season. In the 1994 draft, they picked up Jason Kidd who promised "to turn this team around." How many degrees of turn around did Kidd state was his intention?

Answer: 360

Luckily for the Mavericks, Kidd's court skills outshone his geometry skills as they racked up 36 wins compared to the previous season's 13. Kidd went on to play for Phoenix Suns and New Jersey Nets, before returning to the Mavericks with whom he won 2011 NBA Championship.
6. Yogi Berra said "Baseball is 90% mental and ____ is physical"?

Answer: The Other Half

Berra's real name was Lawrence and he received his famous nickname due to the fact he sat with his arms and legs crossed, looking like a Hindu yogi. Between 1946 and 1985, Berra either played, coached or managed for the New York Yankees or New York Mets, appearing in one of those roles in each of the 13 World Series that featured a New York team between 1947 - 1981.
7. Soccer manager Kevin Keegan, when talking about the German national side said, "The Germans only have one player under 22, and he's ..." With what did Keegan finish this thought?

Answer: 23

Maybe Keegan was counting backwards when he came out with this memorable quote, although he seems to struggle with smaller amounts too, such as numbers one to three, as this quote from him shows,"Chile have three options - they could win or they could lose."
8. "Any time Detroit scores more than 100 points and holds the other team below 100 points they almost always win." These are words of wisdom from which basketball coach?

Answer: Doug Collins

As well as three years coaching Detroit, Collins also coached Chicago Bulls, Washington Wizards and Philadelphia 76ers. He is also a respected basketball broadcaster, covering both the Beijing and London Olympics for NBC.
9. In 2007 which West Ham United player was reminiscing about signing for Leeds United when he said, "I'm 30 now, but back when I was 19 ... seven years ago"?

Answer: Lee Bowyer

Mental arithmetic would appear to not be one of Bowyer's strong points, but he did possess real strength in midfield, especially at Leeds where he made over 200 appearances. He is also an avid angler and owns a carp lake in France.
10. Boxing trainer Lou Duva said, "You can sum up this sport in two words." What were those two words, which probably also apply to this quiz?

Answer: You Never Know

Duva worked with Lennox Lewis, Evander Holyfield, Tony Tucker and Michael Moorer among others. In the 1950's through his involvement in Stillman's Gym in New York City, he met and became good friends with boxing aficianados such as Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and Frankie Valli.
