Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these Steeler players was a member of all four Super Bowl teams of the 1970s?

Answer: Loren Toews

Toews, an 8th round draft choice from Cal in 1973, played 11 seasons for the Steelers. He started in SB XIII and XIV, and subbed for Russell in IX. Not well known to this day among Steeler fans, he actually played in the final 57 consecutive games of his career. Edwards played in IX and X; Banaszek in X, XIII and XIV; and Russell in IX and X.
2. Four kickers played for the Steelers in their first six Super Bowls, starting in Super Bowl IX, and concluding with Super Bowl XL. Which one did not kick a field goal in the Super Bowl?

Answer: Jeff Reed

Reed had no attempts in SB XL. Johnson made his attempt in a losing effort in SB XXX. Bahr made his only kick in two winning efforts in XIII and XIV. Gerala made two and missed two in IX and X, both of which the Steelers won.
3. Between Super Bowl appearances in IX through XL, the Steelers were forced to use a backup quarterback in one game due to an injury to the starter. Who was this substitute quarterback?

Answer: Terry Hanratty

Hanratty, a second round choice out of Notre Dame in 1969, entered SB X after Bradshaw was injured throwing a touchdown pass to Lynn Swann. He handed off on all four of his plays. Brister was never on a Steeler's Super Bowl team. Kruczek and Batch observed their games from the sideline.
4. Which Steeler Super Bowl ended with an interception in the end zone?

Answer: X

In Super Bowl X, Glen Edwards intercepted a deflected pass from Roger Staubach to seal the Pittsburgh victory over Dallas on the game's final play. The Steelers won 21 to 17. It was the team's third interception off Staubach in the game.
5. Which of these Pittsburgh running backs, all of whom have played in at least one Super Bowl, never scored a touchdown in the big game?

Answer: Jerome Bettis

Bettis never ran for a Super Bowl touchdown. Franco scored four in his four games. Parker ran for a 75-yard score in SB XL. Morris scored one in a losing effort in SB XXX.
6. Pittsburgh always had great defenses. In their first six Super Bowls, how many direct points did the defense score?

Answer: 2

The only direct score by a Pittsburgh defense wwere their first-ever defensive points. It was via a two-point safety by Dwight White in SB IX. Despite nine interceptions and four fumble recoveries, the Pittsburgh defense had scored no other points in a Super Bowl. The blocked punt in SB X was on special teams.
7. The true faces of the Pittsburgh Steel Curtain during the 1970s were the defensive front four of LC Greenwood, Joe Greene, Ernie Holmes, and Dwight White. In that order, left to right, what colleges/universities did these legends, who combined for 14 Super Bowl rings, attend?

Answer: Arkansas A+M; North Texas State; Texas Southern; East Texas State

It's hard to believe that not one of these greats came from a major Division I college. In addition to the 14 Super Bowl rings, they combined for 205 sacks, 18 Pro Bowls, and countless dominations of games.
8. Which of the following Steeler quarterbacks threw for the lowest total yards in a Super Bowl game?

Answer: Terry Bradshaw, IX

Surprisingly, it was Bradshaw who threw for a total of 96 yards in SB IX, most of it on the last touchdown drive to defeat the Vikings 16-6. O'Donnell threw for 239 yards in a losing effort in SB XXX. Roethlisberger only had 123 yards in XL, but Pittsburgh won anyhow. Bradshaw had 209 yards and two touchdowns in winning SB X.
9. The Steeler's first Super Bowl win with SB IX over the Vikings was clinched in the 4th quarter. Terry Bradshaw threw a four-yard pass to the tight end. It was the only touchdown pass this player caught all season. Who was he?

Answer: Larry Brown

A year later he was converted to tackle on the offensive line. Grossman caught a touchdown pass in Super Bowl X. Green never played on a Super Bowl team. McMakin was a substitute in SB IX, and made the key block on the 'Immaculate Reception'.
10. The Steelers cemented their team of the '70s with the 1974 draft, when they took Swann( #1), Lambert(#2), Stallworth(#4), and Webster(#5). All four were key players on the four Super Bowl championships. Who was the third round choice?

Answer: No one. The pick was traded to Oakland

Shell, a 1974 free agent, did play for all four 1970s Super Bowl teams. Allen was the #4 choice of 1974, and was on the SB IX and X teams as a reserve. Morgan was a 16th round choice who never made the team. Swann was the MVP of Super Bowl X. Stallworth scored touchdowns in XIII and XIV.
