Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first team in history to win three World Series titles.

Answer: Philadelphia Athletics

The Athletics under the legendary Connie Mack won their franchise's first World Series in 1910 against the Cubs, then followed up in 1911 with a win against the Giants. Their third crown came in 1913 against those same Giants.
2. Since the Major Leagues were created in 1901, with both the American and National Leagues, they were the first team to lose 100 games in a season.

Answer: Washington Senators

The dismal Senators finished their pathetic 1904 season with a 38-118 record, 55.5 games behind the AL pennant-winning Boston Americans. The Phillies were the first National League team to lose 100 games, also in 1904 with a 52-100 record of their own.
3. Other than the Tigers, the only American League team to keep their same franchise and team name throughout the entire 20th Century.

Answer: Chicago White Sox

The Detroit Tigers and the Chicago White Sox were the only two teams in the American League to not change their name in the century. The National League had three teams that never changed in the century also. They were the St. Louis Cardinals, Philadelphia Phillies, and Pittsburgh Pirates.

The Cincinnati Reds changed their name from Reds to Redlegs from 1954-1959, then went back to the Reds. The Phillies were unofficially (according to Major League Baseball) called the Blue Jays for three seasons in the 1940s.
4. Appeared in the most World Series of any team in the 1920s.

Answer: New York Yankees

Second to the Yankees were the NY Giants with five appearances. The Yankees showed their presence for the first time in 1921, then two more consecutive seasons for a three-peat, then another three consecutive seasons from 1926-1928. With a Hall of Fame cast including Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, the Bronx Bombers won three World Series in the decade.
5. Had only one World Series appearance in the entire 20th Century.

Answer: St. Louis Browns

The Browns were pretty much of a joke even to their fans except for the batting of George Sisler in the 1920s. Their only series appearance was in 1944 against the crosstown St. Louis Cardinals which the Browns lost four games to two. The Browns were also noted for the Eddie Gaedel incident in 1951 at the hands of owner Bill Veeck. Gaedel was a midget sent into the game to pinch-hit and walked on four pitches.

The Browns moved the franchise to Baltimore in 1954 to become the Orioles.
6. Had all four starting pitchers win 20 or more games in one season.

Answer: Baltimore Orioles

The Orioles owned whichever mound they stood on in 1971. The starters were highlighted by the records of Dave McNally who went 21-5, Pat Dobson's 20-8 record along with Mike Cuellar and Jim Palmer going 20-9. Amazingly, McNally still finished fourth in the Cy Young Award balloting behind Vida Blue, Mickey Lolich, and Wilbur Wood.

The Orioles went to the World Series in the season but lost to the Pirates four games to three.
7. Was the first team in baseball history to break the four-million attendance mark in a season.

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jays began their expansion team endeavors in 1977 with 1.7 million in attendance. In 1991 they topped the four-million mark with 4,001,527 devoted fans. In 1992 they topped that with 4,028,318, and yet again in 1993 with 4,057,947. In 1992 and 1993 they won both World Series with the aid of their loyal fan support.
8. They were called the "Blues" at some point in their franchise history in Major League Baseball.

Answer: Cleveland Indians

The Indians began their franchise in the new American League in 1901 as the Cleveland Blues, then changed their name in 1902 to Bronchos. It was 1903-1914 that they were seen as the Cleveland Naps before changing and sticking to the Cleveland Indians name in 1915.

The franchise won their first World Series in 1920 against the Brooklyn Robins, in the same season that the first player in history was killed in an on-field incident. Shortstop Ray Chapman was hit in the head by a pitch and died a day later.

The pitch was thrown by New York Yankee Carl Mays.
9. Allowed the most home runs in a season during the entire 20th Century.

Answer: Detroit Tigers

The Tigers went a horrendous 53-109 under manager Buddy Bell and finished 39 games behind the Eastern Division winning Yankees in 1996. No Tiger pitcher in the season won more than seven games while giving up a record 241 season home runs.
10. Went to the most World Series in the 1990s.

Answer: Atlanta Braves

The Braves appeared in the promised land five times in the 1990s. Unfortunately, they could pull off only one title in 1995 against the Indians of Cleveland. They lost to the Twins in 1991, Blue Jays in 1992, and to the Yankees twice in 1996 and 1999.
