The ACC created quite a stir when three members of the Big East Conference bolted for the ACC. Miami and Virginia Tech joined the ACC in 2004. Boston College had to wait an extra year due to certain legal issues and became the 12th member of the ACC for the 2005 football season. Syracuse was also involved in talks to join the ACC (rather than Virginia Tech), but the University of Virginia would not approve the three team expansion unless Virginia Tech was included.

Georgia Tech was a charter member of the Southeastern Conference in 1932. Tech left the SEC in 1967 in a dispute over the number of scholarhips allowed. The school regretted the decision when scholarships were made the same for all NCAA schools and conference membership became more financially important. Luckily, the ACC accepted Ga. Tech in 1979.

It was the first expansion for the league since Virginia joined in 1953.

The Big East sued the ACC over this three-team defection. The matter was settled out of court with payments to other Big East teams and agreed upon future games. Five new schools subsequently joined the Big East: University of Cincinnati, DePaul University, University of Louisville, Marquette University and the University of South Florida.

Prior to the NCAA basketball tournament expansion from 16 to 64 teams, only the ACC tournament champion received a bid. South Carolina had won several regular season championships but lost the tournament. The Gamecocks left the league to improve its chances to enter the tournament as an independent. South Carolina later regretted the move and joined the SEC in 1992.

Maryland won the 1953 AP and UPI titles in the ACC's first year. Clemson won the AP and UPI in 1981. Other non-charter members have won the championship since 1952 including Georgia Tech (1990), Florida State (1993, 1999), and Miami as a non-member (1983, 1987,1989, 1991, and 2001).
