Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of the following constitutes the point accumulation in a tennis match?

Answer: point, game, set, match

When players win a specified number of points, they win that game. Usually, when they win at least six games total, they win that set. Win 2 out of 3 sets and you win the match. Some matches are best out of 5 sets in order to win.
2. What is the name given to a shot that is hit to your opponent who then fails to touch the ball with his or her racket?

Answer: winner

At the end of the match, statisticians compare the number of winners a player has to the number of errors he or she committed. Obviously, the more winners than errors, the greater the chance that you won the match.
3. Which of the following could be the number of games won by two players in a completed set that used a tie-breaking game?

Answer: 7 games to 6 games

With the exception of a player retiring from a match due to illness or injury, a set is over once one player has at least 6 games won, and has won at least two more games than his or her opponent. Sometimes a tie-breaking game is played to decide a 6-game to 6-game tie. In this case, 7 games to 6 games is the only possible outcome of a complete set from the choices given.
4. What is the least number of points needed to win a game?

Answer: 4

Although a game can be won with 5 and 6 or possibly more points, 4 is all it takes. Point system will be asked in the next question.
5. Which of the following could be the way the points are played out in any one game?

Answer: 0-15, 0-30, 15-30, 30-30, 30-40, game

(0-15, 0-30, 15-30,30-30, 30-45, game) cannot be an answer, as "45" is not a number used to keep score. (15-0, 30-0, 30-15, 30-30, game) cannot be an answer, as you cannot jump from a score of "30" to winning the game. The score of "40" must be achieved first. (15-0, 15-15, 15-30, 30-30, game) cannot be an answer as the same reasoning as the previous explanation.
6. What is the term used when a game has reached a 40-40 tie?

Answer: Deuce

Instead of saying "40-40", the term "deuce" is used to denote a tie. Deuce can be reached multiple times throughout a given game if no player wins two consecutive points after it.
7. A game has reached a 40-40 tie. Player "A" wins the next point. What is the term used to express the score with regard to player "A"?

Answer: Advantage

In this case, Player "A" is said to have an "advantage." This is because he or she only needs to win one more point to win the game. However, the other player must win at least 3 more points to win the game. Therefore, "advantage Player 'A'" would be the score.
8. What is the term for when a player hits the ball out-of-bounds accidentally, not caused directly by his opponent?

Answer: Unforced error

Since the player's opponent did not create a difficult shot for the player, and the player hit the ball out-of-bounds, it is called an "unforced" error. An "ace" is a serve that is a winner, and "mistake" and "outer" I made up.
9. In any tournament hosted in France, what French word is used to denote a 40-40 tie during a game?

Answer: Egalite

"Egalite" loosely translates into "equal." "Deuce" is the English word used for a 40-40 tie, and I made up Pe vux. "Tu jour" translates into "you day."
10. Who won the 2007 French Open at Roland Garros for the men and women, respectively?

Answer: Rafael Nadal and Justine Henin

The French Open was exciting to watch as Nadal won his 3rd consecutive French Open, and Henin won her 3rd consecutive French Open. Great stuff.
