Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At the time of his retirement, "The Man" with the most hits that all came with the same team was a St. Louis Cardinal his entire career. He ended up getting 3,630 hits from 1941 to 1963 (excluding 1945 when he was a member of the U.S. Navy). Who was this great Cardinal outfielder who wore number 6?

Answer: Stan Musial

Stan "The Man" Musial had the second most hits ever with a single team. The only player to get more hits with one team was Ty Cobb who had 3,900 hits for the Detroit Tigers. Ty also had 289 hits for the Philadelphia A's which exempts him from this quiz about players with all their hits with a single team.
2. This New York Yankee set the record for the most hits by a member of the storied Yankees club. He had 3,465 hits in his career that lasted from 1995 to 2014. Who is this Yankee that wore number 2 and never played for another team?

Answer: Derek Jeter

It's a testament to any players greatness when they can say they have more hits for the Yankees than Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Joe DiMaggio, and Mickey Mantle.
3. This player played his entire 23 year career with the Boston Red Sox. He played from 1961 through 1983 and had 3,419 career hits. Who is this life-long Red Sox outfielder who retired at the age of 44 and wore number 8?

Answer: Carl Yastrzemski

Carl's 23 years with the Boston Red Sox tied him with Brooks Robinson (Baltimore Orioles) for the longest career with one team.
4. This Baltimore Oriole had 3,184 career hits and all of them came while he played for the Orioles. Who was this "Iron Man" who also played in 2,632 consecutive games and wore number 8?

Answer: Cal Ripken

"The Iron Man", Cal Ripken not only set the record for the most hits by a Baltimore Oriole but the record for most consecutive games played in MLB history. He played the equivalent of 16.24 full seasons without missing a single Orioles game.
5. This Kansas City Royal had 3,154 hits for the Royals and was the first player in MLB history to win a batting title in 3 different decades. Who is this Hall of Famer who wore number 5?

Answer: George Brett

George is one of only 4 players in MLB history to have 3,000 hits, 300 home runs and a .300 career batting average (the others are Hank Aaron, Willie Mays, and Stan Musial). George won the American League batting title in 1976, 1980, and again in 1990 to become the first player to win a batting title in three decades.
6. This Milwaukee Brewer had 3,142 career hits and, of course, all of them while playing with the Brewers. Who is this Milwaukee great who wore the number 19?

Answer: Robin Yount

Robin held all the following Milwaukee Brewer records when he retired: most games played, at-bats, runs scored, hits, doubles, triples, home runs, runs-batted-in, total bases, walks, and most times striking out. Is there anything left?
7. This San Diego Padre had collected 3,141 hits and batted over .300 in 19 consecutive seasons. Who was this Padre that wore #19?

Answer: Tony Gwynn

Tony batted .351 in his first full season (1984) to win the National League batting title. He went on to bat .338 over his career which is the highest average of any player who started his career after WWII. The only time in his career that he didn't hit .300 was his first year when he batted .289 in just 54 games.
8. This Houston Astro played from 1988 until his retirement in 2007 and had 3,060 hits for the Astros. Who wore number #7 and retired as the all-time leading hitter for the Astros?

Answer: Craig Biggio

Along with Biggio's 3,000 hits, he had 668 doubles, 291 home runs, 1,175 RBI's, 414 stolen bases, and a .281 lifetime batting average.
9. This famous Detroit Tiger right fielder never played a minor league game and was the youngest player ever to win a batting title. He played from 1953 to 1974 and finished his career with 3,007 hits. Who is this Detroiter commonly referred to as "Mr. Tiger" that wore #6?

Answer: Al Kaline

Al won the American League batting title in 1955 at the age of 20. He got his 3,000th hit on September 24, 1974 and promptly announced he would retire at the end of the season. Al finished his career with 399 home runs (the most in Detroit Tigers history) and a lifetime .297 batting average. Kaline is not on the all-time hits leader for his team.
10. This Pittsburgh Pirate got exactly 3,000 hits when he doubled on the last regular season at-bat of his career in 1972. Who is this Pirate that wore number 21?

Answer: Roberto Clemente

On December 23, 1972, a massive earthquake struck Managua, Nicaragua. Roberto arranged for three planes to deliver emergency relief funds and then found out that corrupt officials had diverted all three flights, and none of the supplies had arrived for the victims.

He set up another flight and decided he would personally escort this plane in hope that it would make it to Managua. The crew was subpar, the plane had experienced mechanical problems, and it was overloaded by over 4,000 pounds when it crashed upon take-off from Isla Verde, Puerto Rico killing all aboard.

The only player from the Pirates to miss the memorial service was his good friend Manny Sanguillen who chose to dive the area where the plane crashed in an attempt to find Roberto's body.

He has never been found. Roberto was the first player to ever be elected into the Baseball Hall of Fame within 5 years of leaving baseball. Although he won numerous awards in baseball, none compare to the Congressional Gold Medal, Presidential Medal of Freedom, and being the first recipient of the Presidential Citizens Medal he was awarded.
