Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1979 European Cup - Malmö

Answer: Nottingham Forest

Nottingham Forest's participation in the European Cup came about as a result of them having won the Football League First Division by seven points over Liverpool the previous season. They reached the final, which was held at the Olympic Stadium in Munich on 30 May, where they played the champions of the Allsvenskan, Malmö (Sweden).

The game ended with Nottingham Forest winning 1-0, thanks to a goal from Trevor Francis. The following season, Forest retained the trophy by defeating German champions Hamburg.

Their achievement of back-to-back triumphs in the European Cup is considered all the more remarkable given that the season they won the league championship was their first back in the top flight since 1972, becoming one of the few clubs to win the English title the year after achieving promotion.
2. 1980 European Cup Winners Cup - Valencia

Answer: Arsenal

Arsenal reached the European Cup-Winners Cup through their victory in the 1979 FA Cup Final, the second of three successive appearances, where they defeated Manchester United. In the final, held on 14 May at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels, Arsenal faced the winners of the Copa del Rey, Valencia.

The game itself finished 0-0 after extra time, which led to it becoming the first (and, as it turned out, only) Cup-Winners Cup Final to be decided by a penalty shoot-out. In this, Valencia won 5-4. However, this was not the first European final for either side, as both had previously won the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup, with Arsenal's triumph in the competition coming in 1970.
3. 1981 UEFA Cup - AZ Alkmaar

Answer: Ipswich Town

Ipswich Town's qualification for the UEFA Cup came about through finishing in third place in the Football League First Division behind champions Liverpool and runners-up Manchester United. Ipswich reached the two-legged final where they faced Dutch side AZ Alkmaar, who had finished as runners-up in the Eredivisie.

The first leg was played on 6 May at Ipswich's Portman Road, where the home side achieved a 3-0 victory. In the second leg, which was played at Amsterdam's Olympic Stadium, AZ won 4-2, which resulted in Ipswich winning 5-4 on aggregate.

The period between 1978 and 1982 was seen as a golden era for Ipswich Town, as they had won the FA Cup in 1978, the 1981 UEFA Cup, and finished as runners-up in the First Division in 1981 and 1982.
4. 1982 European Cup - Bayern Munich

Answer: Aston Villa

Aston Villa reached the European Cup through their victory in the Football League First Division the previous season, their first league title for 71 years. They managed to reach the European Cup Final, held at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam on 26 May, where they faced the German side Bayern Munich, the champions of the Bundesliga.

Despite the Germans being overwhelming favourites, Aston Villa were able to win 1-0, making it the sixth successive season that an English side had won Europe's premier club trophy. Seen as the greatest moment in the club's history, the words of television commentator Brian Moore's description of the winning goal, scored by Peter Withe, was installed as a banner across the front of the North Stand at Villa Park in 2012.
5. 1983 European Cup-Winners Cup - Real Madrid

Answer: Aberdeen

Aberdeen gained entry into the European Cup Winners Cup by winning the Scottish Cup the previous season, defeating Rangers. The Cup Winners Cup Final, played at the Nya Ullevi stadium in Gothenburg on 11 May, saw the Dons go against the winners of the Spanish Copa del Rey, Real Madrid, who were making another attempt to win a seventh European trophy, having failed to win the competition in 1971.

The game ended 1-1 after normal time, leading to extra time, which ended with Aberdeen getting the winner for a 2-1 victory, making them the third Scottish side to win a European trophy.

Their triumph came during a sustained but brief period of success for the club under manager Alex Ferguson, who had turned them into genuine rivals to the traditional powerhouses of Scottish football, Celtic and Rangers. Between 1980 and 1990, Aberdeen not only won the Cup Winners Cup, but three league titles, five Scottish Cups and two Scottish League Cups.
6. 1985 European Cup-Winners Cup - Rapid Vienna

Answer: Everton

Everton's place in the European Cup Winners Cup was gained through their victory in the previous season's FA Cup Final, where they defeated Watford. In the Cup Winners Cup Final, held at the Feyenoord Stadium in Rotterdam on 15 May, they played Austrian side Rapid Vienna, holders of the ÖFB-Cup.

The game ended 3-1 to Everton, and came in the middle of a mini rennaissance for the club, who not only won both the FA Cup and Cup Winners Cup, but also two Football League titles between 1984 and 1987. However, the club's success was indirectly marred, as they, and all other English clubs, were subsequently prevented from competing in European competition for five years following the Heysel Stadium disaster at the 1985 European Cup Final.
7. 1987 UEFA Cup - IFK Gothenburg

Answer: Dundee United

Dundee United's qualification for the UEFA Cup came about through their third place finish in the Scottish League Premier Division. Reaching the two-legged final, they faced the Swedish side IFK Gothenburg, who had been runners-up in the previous season's Allsvensken.

The first leg was played at the Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg on 6 May and resulted in a slender 1-0 victory for the home side, while the second leg, on 20 May at Tannadice Park, ended in a 1-1 draw, leaving the Swedes to win 2-1 on aggregate. Dundee United's success came towards the end of the 'New Firm' period of Scottish football, when they and Aberdeen became genuine rivals to the traditional powerhouses, Celtic and Rangers - during the 1980s, Dundee United won the Premier Division title and two Scottish League Cups, as well as reaching four Scottish Cup finals and the semi-final of the European Cup.
8. 2002 UEFA Intertoto Cup - Bologna

Answer: Fulham

Fulham's place in the Intertoto Cup, the summer competition for clubs who had not qualified for one of UEFA's two main competitions, came as a result of their finishing as one of the clubs that applied for a place who finished high enough (in their case thirteenth) in the previous season's Premier League. Playing Italian club Bologna, who had come seventh in Serie A, in one of the competition's three 2-legged finals, the first leg at the Stadio Renato Dall'Ara on 13 August ended in a 2-2 draw, while the second leg at Loftus Road on 27 August saw Fulham run out 3-1 victors, resulting in a 5-3 aggregate win for Fulham, granting them qualification to that season's UEFA Cup, in which they eventually reached the third round.
9. 2006 UEFA Cup - Sevilla

Answer: Middlesbrough

Middlesbrough gained entry to the UEFA Cup thanks to their seventh place finish in the Premier League the previous season. Played at the Philips Stadion in Eindhoven on 10 May, their opponents were Spanish side Sevilla, who had finished sixth in La Liga. With both clubs playing in their first European final, Sevilla ended up winning 4-0, scoring three goals in the final twelve minutes of the game for their first European trophy. Since the 2006 final, Sevilla have become the first side to be awarded UEFA's badge of honor for the UEFA Cup, having won it five times, while Middlesbrough have alternated between the Premier League and the Championship (the division below) several times.
10. 2006 UEFA Intertoto Cup - Lillestrøm

Answer: Newcastle United

Newcastle's entry to the UEFA Intertoto Cup came through their seventh place finish in the previous season's Premier League, the highest league position not otherwise eligible for a European spot. Reaching the two-legged final, they played Norwegian side Lillestrøm, whose qualification came from their fourth place finish in the 2005 Tippeligaen.

The first leg, played at St James's Park on 15 July, ended in a 1-1 draw, while the second at the Åråsen Stadion seven days later saw Newcastle achieve a 3-0 victory, with it winning the tie 4-1 on aggregate.

The 2006 Intertoto Cup saw a change in the competition's format, with three rounds instead of five, and eleven winners qualifying for the UEFA Cup, with the team progressing furthest in that competition named as the overall Intertoto Cup champion. Newcastle ended up reaching the last 16 of the UEFA Cup that season, and were thus named as the Intertoto Cup winners.
