Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The first Merseyside Derby took place on 13th October 1894. What was the final score?

Answer: Everton 3-0 Liverpool

Everton originally played their matches at Anfield, but moved to Goodison Park in early 1892 after John Houlding, Anfield's owner, raised the rent. In March 1892, Houlding (who now had an empty stadium), created a new club, Liverpool FC, who took Anfield as their home ground. Two years later, the two clubs met for the first time at Goodison Park and Everton won, with goals from Tom McInnes, Alex Latta and Jack Bell. Liverpool were relegated that season, while Everton finished second behind Sunderland.
2. Out of these four former Liverpool players, which one has scored the more goals in the Merseyside Derby, both in league matches and in cup competitions? (Neville Southall might know.)

Answer: Ian Rush

In order: Ian Rush (20 goals), Steven Gerrard (ten goals), Robbie Fowler (six goals), Kenny Dalglish (five goals). Everton's top scorers in derbies over the years: Dixie Dean (19 goals), Sandy Young (12 goals), Jimmy Settle (eight goals), and Graeme Sharp (six goals).

Former Everton goalkeeper Neville Southall was a fellow Welshman and played on the same international squad as Rush. Both were long runners; Southall played in 41 derbies over his Everton career, while Rush played in 36.
3. What do Nick Barmby, Peter Beardsley, Abel Xavier, Dave Hickson and Gary Ablett all have in common?

Answer: They played for both Liverpool and Everton.

While Liverpool have included a few boyhood blues in their ranks over time - such as Robbie Fowler, Adam Lallana, Steve McManaman and Michael Owen - the above four players all played for both clubs, in the same season in Xavier's case. Xavier, Barmby and Hickson (who also played for Tranmere Rovers) all moved from Everton to Liverpool, while Beardsley and Ablett went the other way. Gary Ablett is the only player of the five to have won the FA Cup with both teams (1989 for Liverpool and 1995 for Everton), while Peter Beardsley is the only one who scored for both teams in various derbies over the years (six goals for Liverpool and one for Everton).
4. In which year did Everton and Liverpool share the FA Charity Shield, after Liverpool won the FA Cup and the title and Everton came second in the league and lost the FA Cup final?

Answer: 1986

Under Kenny Dalglish and Howard Kendall respectively, both Liverpool and Everton flourished in the 1980s. In the 1985-86 season, both teams beat each other away, with Liverpool winning 2-3 at Goodison Park and Everton winning 0-2 at Anfield. The FA Cup final that year was a Merseyside Derby, the first all-Merseyside final, with Liverpool emerging the victors thanks to goals from Ian Rush and Craig Johnston.

As they had also won the league that year (their first Double), they played Everton in the Charity Shield (the annual season-opener played between the previous season's league champions and the FA Cup winner). Adrian Heath scored for Everton in the 80th minute but Rush equalised eight minutes later, and instead of going to penalties, the teams shared the trophy.
5. Over the years, Everton and Liverpool have found themselves drawn against each other in the FA Cup. One such season was the 1990-91 season, when both teams played each other at Anfield in the fifth round, which ended in a draw. What was the score of the replay at Goodison Park?

Answer: Everton 4 Liverpool 4

When Everton and Liverpool met for in the FA Cup that season, they drew 0-0 at Anfield and the game had to be replayed three days later at Goodison Park. Though frustrating for both sides, it was a far more memorable draw. Peter Beardsley scored twice for Liverpool, with the other two goals from Ian Rush and John Barnes, while Everton's goals came from Graeme Sharp and Tony Cottee, who scored two each. Two days later, Kenny Dalglish stepped down as Liverpool manager. Everton and Liverpool met for the third and final time in the second replay on 27th February, with Everton winning 1-0, courtesy of Dave Watson.

In subsequent seasons, instead of second replays, cup games went to extra time and then penalty shootouts.
6. The Merseyside Derby is notorious for racking up more red cards than many other Premier League fixtures. Which two players received a red card at Anfield in 1999 after a fight broke out between them?

Answer: Sander Westerveld and Francis Jeffers

Tempers tend to flare on the pitch between the two teams, with plenty of aggressive tackles and fouls. In this particular derby, which Everton won 1-0 with an early goal from Kevin Campbell, Liverpool goalkeeper Sander Westerveld and Everton's Francis Jeffers had a fight on the pitch, resulting in them both being sent off.

As Liverpool had reached their substitute limit, Steve Staunton replaced Westerveld in goal and even pulled off a save against Abel Xavier. Liverpool later went down to nine men when Steven Gerrard was sent off for an over-enthusiastic challenge on Campbell. Westerveld later said that Gerard Houllier, Liverpool's manager at the time, called him into his office after the game and said he admired Westerveld's passion and aggression.
7. In 2003, Liverpool was announced as the European Capital of Culture for 2008. How did both teams pay tribute to this in the 2006 Merseyside Derby at Anfield?

Answer: Steven Gerrard and James Beattie wore shirts with 08 on the back.

Usually, if a player wears the number 8 on their shirt, it is just the number 8, but a zero was added to mark the occasion of Liverpool being chosen as the 2008 European Capital of Culture, which it shared with Stavanger in Norway. Steven Gerrard wore the 08 shirt for Liverpool, and James Beattie for Everton.

Although the theme from 'Z-Cars', Everton's walkout music, was not played at Anfield on this occasion, it was played at Anfield at Liverpool's Champions League match against Toulouse on 28th August 2007 as a tribute to Rhys Jones, a young Everton supporter who had been murdered in a gang shooting earlier that year. 'You'll Never Walk Alone', Liverpool's own walkout music, was also played while the Jones family were invited onto the pitch.
8. Everton and Liverpool played each other four times in the 2008-09 season.

Answer: True

In the 2008-09 season, with David Moyes and Rafa Benitez in charge respectively, Everton and Liverpool first played each other in the Anfield derby in September 2008, where Liverpool won 2-0 with both goals from Fernando Torres. The Goodison derby in January 2009 ended in a 1-1 draw.

After knocking out Preston North End, Liverpool found themselves drawn against Everton in the fourth round of the FA Cup, where another 1-1 draw at Anfield - with goals scored by Joleon Lescott and Steven Gerrard - forced a replay at Goodison Park. Everton emerged the victors this time, thanks to a Dan Gosling goal in extra time.

Although Everton made it to the FA Cup final, with Louis Saha scoring one of the fastest goals in the competition's history, they were ultimately beaten 2-1 by Chelsea.
9. Which Everton player caused a major controversy in October 2020 when he injured Liverpool's Virgil van Dijk, but was not sent off for it?

Answer: Jordan Pickford

Jordan Pickford had previously been the target of much anger from Everton fans in the 2018-19 season after his goalkeeping error led to Divock Origi scoring in the 96th minute of the Anfield derby, although his performance was much improved when the sides met again at Goodison Park and drew 0-0. Two seasons later, following Liverpool's first league title in thirty years, Pickford tackled Virgil van Dijk, resulting in the Dutchman being substituted only six minutes in. Van Dijk was later found to have an ACL injury which required surgery. Pundits and fans alike were outraged that Pickford had been allowed to remain on the pitch, unlike his team mate Richarlison, who was red carded for a bad foul on Thiago Alcantara. To make matters worse, Liverpool were denied the three points when their third goal, which came from Jordan Henderson in extra time, was ruled out by VAR and the match ended 2-2.
10. The Merseyside derby in February 2021 was a notable one for Everton, but why?

Answer: Everton won at Anfield for the first time in 22 years.

Although Everton had previously beaten Liverpool 2-0 at Goodison Park in October 2010, they had an extraordinarily bad run against Liverpool away since 1999. Everton's last victory at Anfield had been the very same game where both sides had had a player sent off, on 27th September 1999. Over the next two decades, Liverpool beat Everton twice in five seasons and three times in the 2011-2012 season, when they knocked Everton out of the FA Cup semi-final. Everton's winless run at Anfield finally came to an end under Carlo Ancelotti on 20th February 2021, with Richarlison scoring early for Everton in the first half, and Gylfi Sigurdsson scoring a penalty in the 83rd minute to make it 2-0 and Jordan Pickford making some crucial saves to deny Liverpool. Everton's assistant manager Duncan Ferguson, who had himself played against Liverpool on several occasions, joined in the subsequent celebrations with the team.
