1. Which athlete came up with the idea of establishing the London Marathon?

Answer: Chris Brasher

He was inspired after running the New York Marathon. He ran it in 1979 and wondered if the idea could work in London. He called the New York event 'the greatest folk event the world has seen'. Chris won the 3000m steeplechase gold medal in Melbourne at the 1956 Olympics.

They met with athletics organisations, the police and what was the the Greater London Council. All had to be convinced the event would work. Thankfully they were won over.

The GLC were worried that London rate payers would subsidise the event, but with the sponsorship these fears were quelled. The first race was run on 28th March, 1981.

He crossed the line hand in hand with Inge Simonsen of Norway. This was deliberate and a great gesture.

The route took in many of London's greatest landmarks including the Tower of London, Tower Bridge and Admiralty Arch. (It has started at Blackheath every year since its inception, and 2002 was no different!).

Paula won on her first attempt at the marathon distance. Her time was only 9 seconds off the London Marathon record, the second fastest time, with 2:18:55. I was very proud.

Tanni Grey Thompson: her time was 1:39:47, quite a feat considering that Tanni gave birth to a baby girl just 2 months earlier. It was her 6th win.
