Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. One of the most well known of all symbols in the world of sport was undoubtedly the five overlapping rings which constituted the flag of the Olympic Games. The flag exuded world unity under a common theme of sporting excellence. The five rings were coloured blue, yellow, black, green and red, but what was the colour of the background?

Answer: White

As well as the practical element of making the colour of the five rings stand out, the background was coloured white so as to complete the series of six colours that were found on the flag of every world nation. The design and concept of the flag was innovated by Pierre de Coubertin (founder of the International Olympic Committee) in the year that WWI started - 1914. Baron Pierre de Coubertin coined the phrase, "The important thing is not to win, but to take part", from the original French "L' important n'est pas de gagner, mais de participer".

This quote, now considered a maxim, is no longer confined to the world of sport but has transcended boundaries to be applied in any competitive environment.
2. Football, the game that was standardised in the United Kingdom but mastered the world over. The format is simple, kick a ball into the opposition's goal, yet this sport has managed to elicit such passion and exhilaration from spectators for over 100 years. One of the many football clubs worldwide is the London based Arsenal FC. Indeed, Arsenal had a weapon from its very own arsenal and was displayed on its badge for many decades. What was the weapon in question?

Answer: Cannon

Arsenal FC are a successful English football team that have many titles to its name. The north London side have been in the top flight of the sport in the English leagues for a record uninterrupted period of over 80 seasons. The logo of Arsenal FC is, as mentioned, the cannon and this forms the basis of the club's nickname,'The Gunners'. The history of association football is as long as it is uncertain.

Many sport historians believe that one would have to go back over 2000 years to ancient China to discover the humble beginnings of 'the beautiful game'.

The game was standardised and the rules initiated in England, UK and the sport is now played in hundreds of countries worldwide. The pinnacle of success in international football is winning the FIFA Football World Cup which is held every four years.
3. The origins of rugby union that were once taken as unfettered fact now belong in the realms of apocrypha. Whatever its history the sport has spread worldwide since the mid-19th century including to the European nation of France. What mythical beast was the symbol for the Catalans team based in Perpignan?

Answer: Dragon

The well known story of how rugby developed goes along the lines of William Webb-Ellis picking up a football and running with it! Whether this is indeed truth or fiction we will likely never know for sure but the story provides an interesting history for a relatively modern game. The highest honour in international rugby union is the IRB Rugby World Cup and this was first held as late as 1987. The first winners of the competition were New Zealand and just four years later in 1991, Australia beat England (12-6) to pick up the Webb Ellis Cup. This signified the strength and domination of the Pacific region in the sport which would continue for many decades.

The Catalans Dragons were a French rugby union team that were represented by the head of a red dragon with a flame escaping its jaws.
4. The interest in the game of baseball is heavily dependent upon location ever since the rules and regulations of this bat and ball game were established. The USA has been the area from which most spectator interest has accrued. In Major League Baseball, each team is somewhat recognised by a logo which can be found on the majority of its associated memorabilia. What type of being is linked with the Florida Marlins?

Answer: Fish

Indeed the Marlin is a type of fish that belongs to the taxonomic family Istiophoridae. The Florida Marlins have won the World Series on more than one occasion as they swung their way to victory in 1997 and in 2003; a great achievement for a franchise that was established as late as 1993.

The Florida Marlins were born from an investment made into the NFL's Miami Dolphins franchise. Apparently, a name that was originally suggested for the Marlins was the Florida Flamingos.
5. The NFL attracts vast numbers of spectators from around the world. American football is a highly tactical game which combines strength, pace, and accuracy, and it is this fusion which has led to its spiralling success. A franchise based in Arizona has what type of bird as its pictorial representation?

Answer: Cardinal

The American Football franchise based near Phoenix, Arizona Cardinals, was founded in 1898. In the past they've been based in Chicago, St. Louis, and Phoenix, but despite moving from one state to another the franchise has kept the Cardinals name since 1901. On the 1st February, the Arizona Cardinals made the trip to the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, Florida for Super Bowl XLIII.

The Arizona Cardinals would face the Pittsburgh Steelers, the latter of which were substantial favourites to win. The Steelers did indeed win but by a very small margin of four points, 27-23.
6. The sport of cycling has had a turbulent history with many successes such as records being smashed in the Olympic velodromes across the world, and many disappointments. The disappointments, particularly those involved in doping, leave an unfortunate stain on what is essentially a fascinating show of power and endurance. In which cycling event can you see the white jersey with red polka dots?

Answer: Tour de France

In the Tour de France, the polka dot jersey (maillot à pois rouges) is worn by the cyclist who scores the greatest number of points over the mountain stages of the competition that is popular the world over. The title of 'King of the Mountains' is given to the cyclist who has earned this jersey for conquering the punishing peaks. Austrian cyclist Bernhard Kohl donned the 'maillot à pois rouges' in the 2008 Tour de France. Other jerseys that are worn throughout the Tour de France competition include the white jersey (maillot blanc) given to the best rider amongst competitors that are under the age of 25. Also, there is the iconic yellow jersey (maillot jaune) which is worn by the overall leader after each daily stage. Whoever dons this jersey at the end is the winner of the entire competition.
7. Cricket, a game for the ladies and gentlemen amongst us, isn't one of the fastest games in the sporting arena and quite often the game will be played all day long. There are historic rivalries, no less between England and Australia. Which of the following symbols of rivalry is competed for by these two teams?

Answer: The Ashes

The competition consists of five tests each comprising of two innings per team and the winner is the country who wins the most test matches. The format is as simple as that, but, let us just say it takes a while! Australia have been dominant in recent decades and they retained the symbolic urn of ashes from the late 1980s through the mid-2000s.

The competition lost a lot of interest in this period due to the one-sided nature of the affair. Whilst the symbolism of the urn and its connotations of cricketing success is competed for, The Ashes aren't and never have been a trophy in a physical sense.
8. The city of Memphis in the southwest of Tennessee has its very own symbolism with regards the civil rights movement and the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. in 1968. In this same city is a basketball franchise that is represented by which of the following animals?

Answer: Bear

The teams of the National Basketball Association (NBA) provide pace, stamina and exhibit great ball control. The towering figures of the players involved in the sport show supreme athleticism with court coverage and show stealing slam dunks as well as enviable precision with long distance scores. The Memphis franchise, founded in Vancouver in the year 1995, is depicted by a bear and have adopted the name Memphis Grizzlies. FedEx, a company in the courier industry, wanted to change this fierce sounding name to the less intimidating Memphis Express. Well, the franchise quite clearly said no to the idea of sounding like a railway line.
9. Tennis, a face-to-face battle of strength, elegance and finesse. Millions of people from around the world gather in stadiums and in front of their television screens each year to see the best in the world compete for some of the most lucrative titles in world sport. The surfaces these competitors play on have become just as famous and symbolic, grass at Wimbledon and clay at the French Open. You can tell what the competition is just by looking at its surface. So, which of these is a competition that is played on the very traditional and iconic surface of grass?

Answer: Artois Championships

The oldest tennis tournament Wimbledon dates back to the 19th century and such is the rarity of home success, for many Brits this seems like the date the last British person won! This of course isn't true, Virginia Wade won the ladies' championship in the year of the Queen's Silver Jubilee, 1977.

The warm up tournament to Wimbledon is the Artois Championships that are held in the Queen's Club, London. This tournament is also played on the somewhat regal surface of grass. The Rome Masters and the Madrid Masters are both played on a clay surface and the German Open is an all-female affair played on clay and hard surfaces.
10. Some sports fall in and out of popularity and the answer to this question is one such sport. This sport has assumed an image of extreme seriousness with total silence expected of the crowd. The general attire of the players is seemingly dated and the sport lacks any great personalities. What is this sport that is recognised by pink and black balls as well as the symbolic '147' finish?

Answer: Snooker

This may seem highly critical of the sport but it is something I enjoy watching from time to time. Television ratings in the United Kingdom for the sport have declined and an ageing fan-base is posing a problem. Sports promoter, Barry Hearn, has previously commented on many of the problems associated with the sport and had a pessimistic view of its future.

He believed that one of the main problems with snooker is the quote "cathedral silence". In many respects this is true as by the turn of the millennium sport was as much about entertainment as it was about the competition itself.

This can be compared to the incredible success of the pub-game turned sport (haha yes, it is a sport :>) darts! The game doesn't take itself too seriously and the audience can enjoy both the sport and the entertainment on offer. And crucially, darts attracts the younger audience, something that snooker is failing to do on a mass level. In snooker, the ultimate achievement in a frame is to clear the table with a score of 147.

This requires technical perfection with the clearance of 15 red balls alternating with 15 black balls (that is red, black, red, black etc.) followed by clearing a yellow, green, brown, blue, pink and black in that order.
