Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This great Dodger southpaw had his career ended by injury while still in his prime. But first he broke and made all kinds of records including receiving the MVP, a rarity for a pitcher in the Cy Young Award era. Who was this great lefty?

Answer: Sandy Koufax

Koufax, in his last 5 years before retiring due to arthritis had an incredible 1.95 ERA and a 111-34 win-loss record. The other three were all great Dodger pitchers at some point.

Valenzuela was the only pitcher to win both the Cy Young Award and the Rookie of the Year in the same year. Kershaw will eventually make this list of top lefties once he retires. We wish him many healthy years of exciting pitching.
Drysdale, a teammate of Koufax who set his own record of 58 2/3 consecutive scoreless inninngs, was a righty.
2. This 'Big Unit' helped his teams in both leagues.

Answer: Randy Johnson

Johnson, nicknamed 'The Big Unit', is one of the few pitchers who won a Cy Young Award in both leagues - with Seattle in the AL and with Arizona in the NL. He led Arizona to a World Series over the Yankees in 2001 going 3-0 with an incredible 1.04 ERA
3. Which old-time Philadelphia Athletic/Boston Red Sox pitcher won exactly 300 games?

Answer: Lefty Grove

Grove also had over 2200 k's.
He is one of the game's rare 30 game winners - a feat accomplished in 1931 when he also won the MVP award while pitching for the A's.
4. Which Giant lefty won the MVP twice?

Answer: Carl Hubbell

Hubbel, known as 'The Meal Ticket', won the MVP award the first time in 1933 with a 1.66 ERA, pitching 22 complete games. He was inducted into the HOF in 1947. It must be noted that the Cy Young Award was only instituted in 1956.
5. Known for his power pitching, who is this pitcher, who spent 14 seasons with the Phillies and was awarded the Cy Young 4 times?

Answer: Steve Carlton

His total MLB career spanned 24 years. He once struck out 19 batters in one game against the Mets in a losing effort and finished his career with over 4000 k's. Bunning, Roberts and Alexander were all Hall of Famers who played with the Phils.
6. Which pitcher turned hitter won the ERA title before he became a feared slugger?

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth, with a 94-46 W/L record, a 2.28 ERA and 488 strikeouts may have made the Hall of Fame on his pitching prowess. His will to play everyday and be more involved in hitting worked out well for him as he became by a wide margin the best home run hitter of his day and possibly any day.

Brett, not to be confused with his slugger brother, 3B George Brett, had a lifetime .262 average - high for a pitcher.
7. Which Yankee southpaw was caught by HOF'er Yogi Berra?

Answer: Whitey Ford

Ford, as a lefty had such a good move to first base, he once went over 240 innings without allowing a stolen base.

Stottlemyre was also caught by Berra but he was a righty. Pettite and Gomez were in different eras - Gomez in the 30's and Pettite in the 1990s and 2000s.
8. This NY relief pitcher was a driving force behind his team's reaching the World Series in 1973.

Koosman and Guidry were also southpaws - but Koosman was a starter and Guidry worked crosstown with the Yankees. Ryan was a righty.
9. This great lefty with a colorful name started his major league career with the A's.

Answer: Vida Blue

Red - was actually a second baseman before becoming a successful manager for the Cardinals
Greenberg was one of the game's first 500 HR hitters. Black who pitched mostly in the AL and gave up Reggie Jackson's 500th HR also manages the Padres.
10. Which southpaw was the first pitcher to pitch a no-hitter for the Mets?

Answer: Johann Santana

Santana who came from the Twins was a power pitcher until his career was cut short by injury. Seaver was a righty and Wagner and McGraw were mostly used from the bullpen.
