Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these 4 NHL teams scored 200 more goals, than it allowed in a season?

Answer: 1976-77 Montreal Canadiens

The late 1970s, Canadiens were probably the best dynasty of all time. The 1976-77 Montreal team that composed of Guy Lafleur, Larry Robinson, Ken Dryden and many other greats, ended the season 60-8-12 with 132 points. The Canadiens scored 387 goals that year and allowed only 171, a difference of 216, which is 24 better than the 1970-71 Bruins whose difference is 192.
2. The New York Rangers were the first New York based team to join the NHL?

Answer: False

They came in for the 1925-26 season, one year before the Rangered joined the NHL. The Americans were created when Bill Dwyer bought the Hamilton Tigers and moved them to New York.
3. Which NHL team during the 2000 playoffs would record 6 shots in a game?

Answer: Toronto Maple Leafs

The leafs lost 3-0 to New Jersey in game 6 of the 2000 semi-finals. With the leafs facing elimination, the Leafs would manage only 3 quality scoring chances in the game, and would miss the net on each opportunity. Martin Brodeur only faced 6 shots; 3 in the first, 2 in the second, and only 1 in the third.

Much of the credit goes to the Devils' defence, who kept the leafs from coming into the Devils' zone with the neutral zone trap, which forces teams to shoot the puck into the offensive zone instead of carring it.

The fewest before the Leafs 6 shots was the Washington Capitals, who would only fire 7 shots on net in a 4-1 loss to Philadelphia on February 12, 1978.
4. Who coached the Philadelphia Flyers when they went undefeated for 35 straight games during the 1979-80 season?

Answer: Pat Quinn

When the Flyers lost in the second game of the season to the Atlanta Flames, they went on a rampage. Under the direction of Pat Quinn the "Broad Street Bullies" decided to go with speed, quickness, while cutting back on the violence that was once the club's tradmark.

The Flyers finished with 116 points more than anyone else. Unfortunately they lost to the New York Islanders in the Stanley Cup finals.
5. How many goals did the 1983-84 Edmonton Oilers score?

Answer: 446 goals

Nowadays we'd be surprised if any team even hits 400 ever again, but the Oilers that year surpassed their 1982-83 mark of 424 goals with even more. Leading the was Wayne Gretzky with 87, Glenn Anderson with 54, Jari Kurri with 52, and Paul Coffey with 40.

The Oilers were the first team to hit 400 in 1981-82, and continued that string for 5 years till 1985-86. Between 1996-97 and 2001-02, no team has even reached 300 goals.
6. In December 2001, what team did Patrick Roy defeat to record his 500th win?

Answer: Dallas Stars

7. Which of these 4 final games were the largest Canadian TV audience to ever watch a playoff hockey broadcast in the 20th century?

Answer: 1994 Stanley Cup final between Vancouver and the New York Rangers

The final game won by the Rangers 3-2 exceeding the 4.27 million people who watched game 7 of the Clarence Campell final between Toronto and Los Angeles.
8. Which of these NHL goaltenders went unbeaten in 32 straight games?

Answer: Gerry Cheevers

One of the overlooked aspects of the early 1970s Boston Bruins was their goaltending. Gerry Cheevers didn't have the best numbers, but was one of the best at making clutch saves. In 1971-72 Cheevers went 24-0-8 in those 32 games, and led Boston to it's 2nd Stanley Cup in 3 years. He jumped to the World Hockey Association, and the Bruins crashed in the quarterfinals.

Answer: Martin Brodeur

Brodeur played 97 games in 2000-01, with 72 from the regular season and 25 in the playoff, which was 2 more than his own mark a year before with 95, 72 from the season and 23 playoff games leading the Devils to the Stanley Cup. In 1986-87, Ron Hextall set the standard with 92, 66 from the season and 26 playoff games, but then Grant Fuhr's 94 games a year later, 75 season games and 19 playoff games. Richter came close with 91 during the Rangers cup win in 1993-94, 68 season and 23 playoff games.

The deal paid off for Toronto, who won the Stanley Cup that year.
