Birkenhead is a large town on the opposite bank of the River Mersey from Liverpool. Tranmere Rovers were formed there in 1884, originally under the name of Belmont F.C., before adopting their current name the following year. Tranmere was a village in its own right before becoming a suburb of Birkenhead in the late 19th century.

Tranmere Rovers had a number of "homes" in their early years before settling into Prenton Park in 1912. In February 1972, a record crowd of 24,424 attended the F.A. Cup match against Stoke City.

Tranmere and Oldham were members of Division Three (North) when they met on Boxing Day 1935. Whether the previous day's Xmas celebrations were a factor or not is not recorded, but the teams combined for an amazing 17 goals, with Tranmere winning 13-4. Bunny Bell scored no fewer than nine of Tranmere's goals. The score at half-time was 8-1.
Tranmere had played Oldham the day before; and lost 4-1.

Although based in England, Tranmere were one of a number of teams from English counties which border Wales which were allowed to compete in the Welsh Cup until 1995. Their only success in the trophy came in season 1934-35 when they defeated another English club, Chester, in the final at Wrexham.

John King made more than 400 league appearances for Rovers in the 1960s, and had two spells as manager of the club, the first between 1975 and 1980, and the second between 1987 and 1996. This second tenure coincided with the best league spell in the club's 20th century history.

After saving them from relegation from Division Four on the final day of season 1987-88, King guide them to promotion to Division Three the following season and then onwards to Division Two in 1990-91. Between 1993 and 1995, Rovers had the misfortune to lose in the promotion play-offs in three straight seasons to just miss out on the chance to play in the top flight.

After a victory over Southampton in the fifth round, Tranmere then faced their other Merseyside neighbours, Liverpool, in the quarter finals, with a thrilling tie at Prenton Park ending in a 4-2 Liverpool victory.
