Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What distance do triathletes run in an Ironman?

Answer: marathon

In a Half Ironman the distance is a half marathon (13.1 miles),in an Olympic triathlon the distance is 10K (6.2 miles), and in a sprint the distance is usually about 5K(3.1 miles). By the way, a marathon is 26.2 miles.
2. What is almost always the first event in a triathlon?

Answer: swim

The swim is usually done first for safety reasons. Fatigue is the most dangerous in the swim (you can't walk the swim).
3. All triathlons have an open water swim?

Answer: False

Most triathlons do, but there are a number of sprint triathlons where the swim is held in a pool.
4. What is the term T1?

Answer: swim/bike transition

The bike/run transition is T2. The best time for the race is called the course record.
5. What is it called when you are less than three bike lengths from the biker in front of you?

Answer: drafting

In most amateur races, drafting is illegal. It is legal in a number of elite races. Blocking is staying on the left hand side of the course for a long amount of time (which is not legal either).
