Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which of these distances is the longest type of event?

Answer: Half Ironman

Half Ironman: 1.2 mile swim, 56 mile bike, 13.1 mile run. There can be some variation in the other distances, but the official distance for an Olympic tri is .9 mile swim (1.5K), 24.5 mile bike (40k), and 6.2 mile run (10K). A Sprint is half the Olympic distance. Minis are very short fun races.
2. According to USAT rules what item must you have to compete in a triathlon?

Answer: Helmet

Not wearing a helmet is dangerous!
3. Let's go to race morning. Your race is early. What is your best option for breakfast before the race?

Answer: Wake up early enough to eat and eat something familiar

Trying anything new on race day is a bad idea!
4. Your event is USTA sponsored. Which item can you bring to use, during the race, on race day?

Answer: Aero Bars

Walkman are banned because they distract cyclists and runners from following the instructions of race officials. Glass water bottles are hazardous to other competitors. Flippers would give a competitor a huge unfair advantage.
5. When should you pump up the tires on your bike for the last time before you ride it on the course?

Answer: The morning of the race

Not pumping your tires before the race can cause a flat on the course!
6. Now on to the swim: which is not a benefit of wearing a wetsuit?

Answer: Increased mobility.

The reason that wetsuits are allowed in triathlons is to keep you warm. However, additional benefits include better floatation and a better body position. These two benefits help weaker swimmers, much more than strong swimmers.
7. According to USTA rules at what temperature can you no longer wear a wetsuit, if you wish to me eligible for prizes?

Answer: 78o F

A 83 F no one is allowed to wear a wetsuit. Even when the water temperature is below 78 degrees many strong swimmers choose not to use wetsuits. Others swim without them due to their high cost.
8. You should always try to start in the front of your wave no matter how good or poor a swimmer you are?

Answer: False

If you are a weak swimmer, you want to avoid the chaos (getting kicked, getting your goggles knocked off, etc.) that being in the front or middle of the group will bring. Start in the back and towards the side if you are a weak swimmer. You will have a much better triathlon swimming experience!
9. Now on to the bike course: which of the following carries a penalty in an amateur event?

Answer: All of these

A helmet won't do you any good if it isn't buckled. Drafting and Blocking are both annoying to other riders and potentially dangerous!
10. What is blocking?

Answer: Riding for a long period of time on the left hand side of the road.

In cycling, you are supposed to stay on the right hand side of the road. The left hand side is for passing. Following the person in front of you too closely is drafting. Intentionally cutting someone off would we called just plain old wrong (I have never seen this happen by the way).
11. To avoid drafting how many bicycle lengths should you stay behind another bicycle?

Answer: 3

Despite the fact that drafting is illegal in amateur events, you are allowed to pass another cyclist providing you do so in 15 seconds.
12. Now on to the run: on the run, it is important is to remember all of these things except?

Answer: Run faster when going uphill.

Form, Pacing, and being positive will all help you to make it to the end.
13. If offered sports drink and water which should you choose?

Answer: Sports drink, electrolytes are important in long distance events.

In a triathlon (except for triathlons that are not very long), your only danger does not come from dehydration. Equally, dangerous is losing to many electrolytes.
14. If you walk on the run, you will be disqualified?

Answer: False

Lots of people walk on the run at sometime or another. It is perfectly legal.
15. Five to six hours after the race you should _____ ?

Answer: Avoid large crowds if possible.

You should avoid large crowds because, you are more likely to contact an illness five to six hours after a large amount of strenuous activity.
