Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1989, Sunday Silence won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness Stakes. Who was the colt who won the Belmont?

Answer: Easy Goer

Sunday Silence and Easy Goer had an intense battle that year over the Triple Crown. Ironically, Easy Goer's sire was Alydar who, in one of the sports greatest rivalries, battled against Affirmed for the 1978 Triple Crown. Affirmed won every time, although some people still think that Alydar was the better horse.
2. In 1920, what horse won the Preakness and the Belmont Stakes, but did not even enter the Kentucky Derby?

Answer: Man O' War

Man O' War's owner Samuel Riddle, thought running a mile and a quarter in May was too much to ask of a three-year old, so he didn't enter him in the Derby. If he had, Man O' War would surely have won the Triple Crown. The Derby was won that year by Paul Jones, a gelding.
3. In 1972, what horse won the Preakness Stakes, interrupting Riva Ridge's Triple Crown sweep?

Answer: Bee Bee Bee

Riva Ridge, who came in fourth in the Preakness, was owned by C.T. Chenery and trained by Lucien Lauren who, one year later, would win the Triple Crown with Secretariat.
4. In 1966, Kauai King won the Preakness Stakes and the Belmont Stakes?

Answer: False

He won the Derby and the Preakness, but came in fourth in the Belmont Stakes. Amberoid won the Belmont that year.
5. What horse, the Sire of Kauai King, won two out of three Triple Crown races in 1953?

Answer: Native Dancer

Native Dancer won the Preakness and the Belmont, but had come in a close second to Dark Star in the Derby.
6. What horse lost his Triple Crown "bid" to Coastal in 1979?

Answer: Spectacular Bid

Spectacular Bid won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, but came in third in the Belmont Stakes. I just want to take a moment to pay tribute to Spectacular Bid who died on June 9th, 2003, of a heart attack at the age of 27. In his racing career, out of thirty starts, he won twenty-six times, placed twice, and showed once. At stud, he sired forty stakes winners. He was a true champion.
7. Which horse won the "Horse of the Year" in 2001, after winning the Preakness and the Belmont?

Answer: Point Given

Ridden by Hall of Fame Jockey Gary Stevens, Point Given won the Preakness and the Belmont (by more than twelve lenghts), and was voted Horse of the Year for 2001.
8. In 2002, War Emblem won the Kentucky Derby and the Preakness, only to be beaten in the Belmont by what horse?

Answer: Sarava

Sarava, a longshot with odds of about 80-1, came out of nowhere to win the Belmont.
9. What horse, in 1995, won the Kentucky Derby, lost the Preakness, then came back to win the Belmont Stakes?

Answer: Thunder Gulch

All of these horses won two out of three of the Triple Crown races, only to be denied the third. Charismatic, after winning the Derby and the Preakness, broke down in the Belmont Stakes. The actions of his jockey, Chris Antley, who held his damaged foreleg off the ground, saved his life. Even with his injury, Charismatic lived up to his name and gamely finished third.
10. What horse denied Funny Cide a Triple Crown sweep in 2003?

Answer: Empire Maker

Empire Maker redeemed himself in the Belmont after he came in second in the Derby and skipped the Preakness. Go Empire Maker.
