UK Netball Superleague: 2008-09 Quiz

Answer: Glasgow Wildcats

Glasgow Wildcats joined the Superleague in 2008. Although their season was off to an unsurprisingly rocky start, they cashed in on an unexpected win against Brunel Hurricanes in the final weeks of the season allowing Leeds Carnegie to step up into that vital 4th place playoff position. Wildcats ended the season 8th of nine teams with 4 points.

Answer: Pamela Cookey

Pamela Cookey, Team Bath captain, led her team to victory in a nail biting final against Mavericks. She prolonged her departure to the ANZ Championships to play with her teammates in the final, instead leaving to join Northern Mystics the following day. Pam was one of the most accurate shooters in the season with an average of 93% in the final.

Answer: Loughborough Lightning

Having secured third place in the end of league table, the Mavericks went on to play Leeds Carnegie in the second playoff game. They won this by knocking Leeds out of the competition and played playoff one losers Loughborough Lightning in the final playoff game.

This was an action packed and interesting game ending in a draw at full time. Extra time was played, an unusual occurrence, and the Mavericks eventually won by just one goal to take on Team Bath in the Grand Final.

Answer: Karen Atkinson

Karen Atkinson won her 100th cap for England during the England vs Jamaica Test Series. She also played as the Mavericks captain and C/WA in the season, bringing valuable experience to the 2nd place squad.

In the league table, the Loughborough Lightning were second after Team Bath with 28 points. Although Mavericks went on to beat Loughborough in the 3rd playoff, they were 3rd in the table with 24 points. Leeds Carnegie scraped a 4th with 16 points putting them into the playoffs for the first time, and Northern Thunder were 7th with 12 points.

Answer: Jo Harten

Jo Harten was part of the Team Bath squad in the 2007-08 season and moved to Loughborough for her first full season with them. The 19-year old has also played for the full England Squad in their test series against Jamaica in early 2009.

Although she was out on injury at the beginning of the season, Monique Wood took to the court to help Bath keep a hold on their unbeaten record.

Brunel Hurricanes came a disappointing 5th in the league table despite a promising start to the season. This left Leeds an opening to step up into 4th place, and they dashed Brunel's Superleague title dreams for yet another season.

Answer: Kirsty Delves

Kirsty Delves was the only one of the four not to be part of the England squad that defeated Jamaica 67-54, 57-47, and 55-49 in the three Test matches. The young goal shooter played for Team Bath in the season however, and helped them on their way to victory.
