Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The United States Youth Soccer Association was the largest of its kind in America in 2004. Per their own figures, it was estimated to have how many registered members?

Answer: 3.2 million

This involvement does not include additional youth soccer associations such as the AYSO (American Youth Soccer Organization). These other entities are smaller but growing as well.
2. In what year did the USYSA originate the Olympic Development Program or "ODP" for youth soccer players?

Answer: 1977

The boys' program was the introduction. The girls' program followed. These were "feeder" teams of players from all areas of the country that ultimately provide possible players for our national team.
3. Which one of the following is not an Olympic Development Program level "pool", in the training and selection process?

Answer: Metropolitan

All pools consist of selected competitive players who are then chosen to be on the representative teams (by ODP qualified coaches) who then go to the training camps, State then Regional then National. Obviously the numbers thin as the rise to the top continues.
4. In the Olympic Development Program endeavor as well as all other activities, the USYSA was divided into how many regions in 2004?

Answer: 4

They generally translate into : Reg I - Northeast, Reg II - Midwest, Reg III - South and Reg IV - West.
5. As all soccer in the world does, youth soccer in the U.S. is governed by the laws of which organization?

Answer: FIFA

If you are new to the sport, FIFA is an acronym for Federation Internationale de Football Association, the grandaddy, the end all and be all, the mothership. It is the top rule making body for soccer over the world and hands down the "Laws of the Game".
6. There is an official "Youth Soccer Month" in America. Do you have any idea when that is?

Answer: September

Although most high schools start their league play in January, most club league play begins in the fall (which continues again in the spring), and the colleges only have a fall season.
7. In designating a "Youth Soccer Month", there are four "Pillars" associated with the promotion. Which is not one of the four?

Answer: Footwork

The fourth is pretty important to us all: Family.
8. Mia Hamm was the youngest player ever to be named to the US Women's National Soccer Team. At what age did she join the team?

Answer: 15

She joined the team in 1987. She was the highest scoring Women's soccer player in international matches.
9. At what age did Freddy Adu play with the US U-17 mens national team in his first international soccer match?

Answer: 13

His debut with that team came in 2003. When he eventually signed to play for DC United Soccer Club in April 2004 at age 14, it made him the youngest US athlete to play professionally in 100 years.
10. What United States professional sports league came to an end just before the US Women's Team competed in the 2004 Olympics?

Answer: WUSA

Sadly underfunded, the Women's United Soccer Association league came to an end weeks before the 2004 Olympics victory of the USA Women's National Team of which most team members had been a part. The league was an inspiration to many female players in America during its three full seasons from 2001 to 2004.
