Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the Philadelphia Union's first primary supporters club?

Answer: Sons of Ben

The Sons of Ben were formed over a year before the MLS awarded a team to Philadelphia making them one of the few fan clubs that existed before they had a team to cheer for. Their early membership size helped convince MLS that there would be support for a team in Philadelphia.

The Cheesesteaks were the supporters group for the Philadelphia Independence in the short lived Women's Professional Soccer league.
2. The Philadelphia Union played their first two home games at Lincoln Financial Field, home of the Eagles, while they waited for their permanent home, PPL Park. In what nearby city was PPL Park built?

Answer: Chester, PA

Chester, PA was where William Penn initially landed in the 17th century. Martin Luther King, Jr. received his divinity degree in Chester.

Unfortunately, when the Union moved there, it was one of the poorest and most dangerous cities in the country. There is hope that the soccer team moving there will help spur an economical revival.
3. PPL Park, home of the Philadelphia Union, has one of the most breathtaking views of any professional sports stadium due in a large part to the bridge that overlooks the stadium. What is the name of this bridge?

Answer: Commodore Barry Bridge

The Commodore Barry Bridge is the second southernmost bridge across the Delaware River and the southernmost between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. It is so close to PPL Park that when a truck crosses it before a game, the fan in the stands can tell whether or not the truck has a flat tire by the difference in sound.
4. The Philadelphia Union supporters have a tradition to stop what they are doing, raise their scarfs, and sing their good luck song, Four Leaf Clover, at every home game. When do they do this?

Answer: 20 minutes 10 seconds into the game

Four Leaf Clover is sung at 20:10 into the game to celebrate the fact that the Union's first season in existence was 2010.
5. An early fan favorite for the Philadelphia Union was Sebastien Le Toux. In their first season he led the team in both goals and assists. On how many of the Union's 35 goals during that first season did Le Toux have either a goal or an assist?

Answer: 25

In 2010, Le Toux had 14 goals and 11 assists for a total of 25 points. This represented 71% of the team's goals which was an MLS record for percentage of a team's goals to which he had contributed.

Le Toux won the hearts of the fans by scoring a hat trick in the Union's first ever home game, a 3-2 win over DC United, the first ever win in franchise history.
6. In what year did the Philadelphia Union make their first appearance in the MLS playoffs?

Answer: 2011

The Union made the playoffs for the first time in their second season in the league. They finished 3rd in the Eastern Conference but lost both games of their home and home series to eventual league runners up, the Houston Dynamo.
7. Who was the first manager for the Philadelphia Union when they were admitted to MLS as an expansion team in 2010?

Answer: Peter Nowak

Nowak was a popular manager for his first two seasons, including leading the team to the playoffs in 2011. But when he traded away several popular players including leading goal scorer Sebastien Le Toux and captain Danny Califf and the team got off to a 2-7-2 start in 2012, he was fired and replaced by assistant John Hackworth.
8. In 2012, PPL Park hosted the MLS All-Star game. What European team was the opponent of the MLS All-Stars?

Answer: Chelsea

The MLS All-Stars won the game 3-2 on a stoppage time goal by Eddie Johnson. This was the first time in 4 years that the MLS team had won the game against a visiting European team (when they beat West ham United 3-2 in 2008).
9. In 2013, the Philadelphia Union unveiled a new black 3rd Jersey which paid homage to what former team?

Answer: Bethlehem Steel

Bethlehem Steel FC was an early American soccer powerhouse (formed in 1907). They won what is now the US Open Cup five times (1915-16, 1918-19 and 1926) and finished runners-up in 1917. The Great Depression saw the team forced to fold in 1930.
10. Philadelphia Union players have had international success. In fact, two of the first three team captains played in the 2014 World Cup. Which country did they play for?

Answer: Colombia

Goalkeeper Faryd Mondragon and defender Carlos Valdes both played for the Colombian team. Mondragon was a backup goalie but was given a cameo appearance at the end of the third group game which made him the first 43 year old player ever to play in the World Cup.
