Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Where and when was Valentino Rossi born?

Answer: 16 February 1979, Urbino

Yes, he was born on this day, so he's an Aquarius (the craziest sign of the zodiac!), and in this little town in the middle of Italy.
2. In which country did he start his career in the Championship?

Answer: Spain

He started in the GP of Spain in Jerez in the year 1996.
3. His father, who also rode motorcycles competitively, was very happy that Valentino wanted to follow his steps in motorcycling when he was a child.

Answer: False

False. Graziano (his father) didn't like it because he didn't want Vale to get hurt in a race. He wanted his son to be a Formula 1 driver. After Vale became a champion, he was very happy for him!
4. With which one of these riders does he have a very "tense" relationship?

Answer: Max Biaggi

Max and Vale have been "formally" enemies since the Yamaha pilot made some declarations in 1997 about the character of Rossi that he didn't like at all.
5. In which year did he win the 250 cc Championship?

Answer: 1999

He became the youngest to have won the 250 cc championship at the age of 20, although Marco Melandri improved it in 2002 for three months (Vale was Champion with 20 years and a half and Melandri with 20 years and three months).
6. Mick Doohan became Vale's team adviser in 2000.

Answer: True

Mick has "taught" Vale since 2000, when he started in the category of 500 cc.
7. What did Vale have for a "racemate" when he raced MiniMotorbikes?

Answer: A Ninja Turtle

He has a small plush of Michelangelo which was his "racemate" when he competed with the MiniMotorbikes: It was stuck on his helmet!
It retired from competition when he moved to the higher categories and went with Vale in the box.
8. When did he win his first MotoGP Championship?

Answer: 21 September 2002

He became the first champion of this new category and he won it in race number 12 in that year (his 10th victory).
9. Which of these is one of his tattoos?

Answer: A Turtle

He has a tattoo of a turtle with the number 46 on its shell. (Ironic, isn't it?)
10. When he first raced in the World Championship, what number did he use?

Answer: 46

It was the number with which his father, Graziano, won his first race in the 70s.
11. What firm was he riding for when he won his two first world championships?

Answer: Aprillia

After winning the 125 and 250cc championships with Aprillia, Valentino moved to the 500cc class with Honda in 2000.
12. Which was the last race he won in 02-03 season?

Answer: Australia

He won the championship in Brazil. Later, Barros won the GPs of Malaysia and Valencia, and Biaggi the GP of Japan-Motegi. Rossi won in Australia and lost the bet with Barros: If Barros won more races than him after he had won the championship, he would pay him a dinner... Vale had to get his wallet!
13. His favorite circuit is Japan-Suzuka.

Answer: false

He HATES Suzuka, and more after Katoh's accident in April 2003. Vale suffered an accident in 2002 in that circuit that skinned his right arm, and blamed against the circuit: "It's very dangerous. Nobody wants to ride here, but there are economic interests in between." Perhaps his favorite circuits are Assen (Netherlands) and Phillip Islands (Australia).
14. Which is his dog's name whose photo he put in front of the number 1 when he won the 2003 MOTOGP Championship?

Answer: Guido

In the t-shirt he wore when he won the 2002 500 c.c. Championship there were 35 reasons why he had won and one of them was "Perche Guido è in moto con me" (Because Guido goes on the moto with me).
15. He doesn't accept to have tobacco advertisements on his moto or on his overall.

Answer: False

He once visited a hospital with children with cancer in South Africa and he got impressed, so he began a personal campaign against tobacco. If HONDA obliged him to ride with it they would have to give the same quantity that he earns to aid against cancer. Despite this, after moving to Yamaha Gauloise Fortuna, his moto sported the Gauloise name.
