Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the nickname of the first official team, set up in 1928, who ran at both Hyde Road and at Kirkmanshulme Lane?

Answer: Aces

AKA Belle Vue. Although demonstration matches were held previously, the first official team was the Belle Vue Aces, based in Manchester. Many famous riders rode for the Aces, including Peter Collins and Ivan Mauger. Their Hyde Road track was demolished in 1987, and they moved to the Greyhound track around the corner. Belle Vue can brag to be the only team that ran through World War II.
2. Starting in 1948, this team was one of many to join the post-war leagues. They're most associated with purchasing Jason Crump for the 2007, have had over 340 different points-scoring riders and according to their website have beaten Coventry 56 times. What is their nickname?

Answer: Pirates

Poole Pirates bought Jason Crump off belle Vue in the Winter 2006/2007, but they have had many famous riders before Ken and Neil Middleditch (well, I've heard of them), Ryan Sullivan and Gary havelock. They are now one of the longest running speedway teams in the Elite League.
3. This Elite League team are based in the East of England showground, and boast one of the UK's biggest tracks. They started in 1970 and are still running today.

Answer: Panthers

The Peterborough Panthers came tenth out of seventeen in their first year of racing, followed by a sixteen out of seventeen in the next year. In 1995 they joined the Premier League, graduating two years later into the Elite League. They finally won the Elite League in 2006.
4. Which team, based in Arlington, Sussex, was started in 1931 (making it one of the oldest teams running, and had colours of blue and yellow?

Answer: Eagles

Yes, the Eastbourne Eagles are actually based two miles away, in Arlington. They have been running more than 70 years in this small village and have Saturday race nights. It is one of the smallest tracks in the Elite League.
5. This team started in 1984, after their county went twelve years without speedway. The nickname was taken from one of the three teams that were replaced by this team, who have since changed their track name. What nickname is it?

Answer: Hammers

Arena-Essex Lakeside Hammers were created for the county of Essex after Rayleigh, Romford and West Ham all disappeared. The name 'Hammers' comes, like the football club from West Ham. However, at the beginning it was controversial, with no safety fence protecting the speedway from the stock cars. This was no problem in the end.
6. This team's first track is now a football ground, however, in the 1950s they moved to their new home. When their track was concreted over to build a stock car ring, they simply built a track inside. What is the nickname of this long-standing team?

Answer: Witches

It was the Ipswich Witches. In 1998, Ipswich became one of the few teams to do 'The Triple', Elite League, Knockout Cup, and Craven Shield.
7. Like The Belle Vue Aces, this team were founded in 1928 in Brandon, and have been racing there ever since, better than their early team companions, the Aces, who had to move. What is their nickname?

Answer: Bees

These are actually the Coventry Bees, Elite league winners in 2005. They then won the knockout cup in 2006. Their track contains a greyhound track and stock cars around the outside.
8. Starting in April 1939, they raced in 1940 and half in 1941, when they were suspended for the war. Racing resumed in 1949 after track alterations. They have occasionally run two teams, one Elite League and one Conference League. One nickname has been associated with them all the way through. Which one is it?

Answer: Cheetahs

Only one was not Oxford-based, the Rhinos. Of the others, Silver Machine was their 2005 Elite League team, whilst the Cheetahs were the Conference League, and the Lions were the 2007 junior, or 'Acadamy' League team. The Cheetahs is the oldest and most commonly used nickname.
9. This team moved up to the Elite League in 2006, dropping their 'Racers' nickname in favour of the answer. They started in 1968. Their first match was at a greyhound stadium, where they beat the Nelson Admirals. What is the nickname?

Answer: Bulldogs

Reading have moved twice. Once from the greyhound track they started at to Tilehurst when the track was sold on: There's an industrial estate there now: and once more when Tilehurts was sold on to build warehouses. For a time Reading were racing, but with no home ground. They moved to, of all places, an old rubbish tip in Smallmead to race there.
10. They have raced for over 59 years in the top leagues of speedway, and have raced at the same track, something no other team has managed to do. The first race was in 1949, but what is the nickname?

Answer: Robins

The first meeting of the Swindon Robins was non-league, and resulted in the Robins losing. However, this history is under threat by the council and the GRA, who want to built houses on the spot of the track.
