Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The WTA wasn't actually the first professional women's tour in the Open Era. What tour preceded the creation of the WTA?

Answer: Virginia Slims Circuit

The Virginia Slims Circuit kicked off in September 1970. The Women's Tennis Association (WTA) wasn't established until Billie Jean King spearheaded a campaign to unite women's tennis in 1973.
2. Computerised rankings were introduced to the WTA on November 3, 1975. Who was the first WTA World #1?

Answer: Chris Evert

In 1973, Chris Evert had reached the final of the French Open and Wimbledon, and the Semi-finals of the US Open. That meant she was instated as World #1 when computerised rankings began, which took into account the previous 12 months of tournament results.

Evonne Goolagong Cawley was the second women to reach #1, first achieving the feat on April 26 1976. Steffi Graf & Serena Williams first attained #1 much later, in 1987 and 2002 respectively.
3. Because the WTA rankings are based off tournaments results for the previous 12 months, players can achieve the #1 ranking without winning one of the four Major tournaments. Who was the first player to do this?

Answer: Kim Clijsters

Kim Clijsters achieved the World #1 ranking on August 11, 2003. She went on to win 4 Major titles but the first of these wasn't until the 2005 US Open.

Dinara Safina was World #1 but never won a Major.
Venus Williams won Wimbledon in 2000 and first achieved #1 on February 25, 2002.
Patty Schnyder never won a Major, and her ranking topped out at #7.
4. At the end of every season since 1972, the top-ranked players compete in a prestigious tournament called the WTA Finals (previously WTA Championships). Which city was the first to host this tournament?

Answer: Boca Raton, Florida, USA

The first year-end tournament was played on clay in Boca Raton. It was won by Chris Evert.
5. Top-ranked players who won a tournament in the season, but didn't qualify for the WTA Championships, qualified for the year-end 'Tournament of Champions'. This tournament first took place in 2009 but which city was its host?

Answer: Bali, Indonesia

Cities hosted the 'Tour of Champions' in three-year stints. Bali hosted from 2009-2011, and then Sofia took over from 2012-2014. It was replaced by the WTA Elite Trophy (which has different qualifying criteria) in 2015.
6. Reaching World #1 in the WTA Rankings is an impressive accomplishment. Who was the first player to retire from the sport whilst holding this ranking?

Answer: Justine Henin

In May 2008, Justine Henin lost a match to Dinara Safina in Berlin and shortly thereafter announced her retirement from the sport - even though she was ranked World #1 at the time and a favourite to defend her French Open title in a couple of weeks' time.

Not only that, she requested the WTA to remove her from the rankings rather than letting her points slowly drop off over the next 12 months.
7. When were 10 different nationalities represented in the Top 10 of the WTA rankings for the first time?

Answer: January 2011

On 31 January 2011, the Top 10 in the WTA Rankings looked like this:
1) Caroline Wozniacki (DENMARK)
2) Kim Clijsters (BELGIUM)
3) Vera Zvonareva (RUSSIA)
4) Francesca Schiavone (ITALY)
5) Samantha Stosur (AUSTRALIA)
6) Venus Williams (USA)
7) Li, Na (CHINA)
8) Jelena Jankovic (SERBIA)
9) Victoria Azarenka (BELARUS)
10) Agnieszka Radwanska (POLAND)
8. Who were the first pair of sisters to win a WTA doubles title?

Answer: Manuela & Katerina Maleeva

Although all of these pairs won doubles titles together, the Maleeva sisters were first with a tournament win in Indianapolis in July 1985. Their younger sister Magdalena was also a top WTA player.
9. Who was the first unseeded woman to win a Major tournament (as based off WTA rankings)?

Answer: Chris O'Neil, 1978

Chris O'Neil won the Australian Open in 1978 when ranked 80th in the WTA. She was the lowest ranked player to win a Major tournament until Serena Williams won the Australian Open in 2007 whilst ranked 81st (coming back from injury).
10. Hawk-Eye revolutionised tennis when players became able to "challenge" a linesperson's call. Which official WTA tournament (excluding Majors & exhibitions) was first to invest in this technology?

Answer: NASDAQ-100 Open (Miami, USA, 2006)

Using multiple cameras tracking the movement of the tennis ball, Hawk-Eye has reduced the number of on-court tantrums because players are allowed to "challenge" a call they disagree with and the umpires, players, and crowd see a digital representation of where the ball landed on the on-court screen.
