Who is this 8-time Ryder Cup team member? Hint

Question 6 of 10
6. The 1954 Cleveland Indians broke the American League record for season wins, previously held by the mighty 1927 Yankees with 110 wins. Question 8 of 10
8. Notre Dame thought they were set to take the 1926 college football championship. At 8-0 the Irish had only two games remaining - a tough one with rival Southern Cal but first a snoozer against a small Pittsburgh engineering school whom they had trounced the last two seasons by a combined 111-19 score.
So confident was Irish head coach Knute Rockne that he headed to Chicago to watch the Army-Navy game (and make a few dollars writing a newspaper article) leaving his squad in the hands of assistant "Hunk" Anderson. Notre Dame played its second string in the first quarter, fell behind and never came back. They lost the game 19-0. What team called the Tartans, which now plays in Division III, upset Notre Dame on this memorable day?
Hint

Question 9 of 10
9. To say that Aleksandr Karelin was a heavy favorite to win Gold in Greco-Roman Wrestling at the 2000 Sydney Olympics would be a huge understatement. "The Russian Bear" had won gold in every international event he entered since 1988 including three olympic games. He hadn't given up a point in a match in over six years. Karelin is considered the greatest ever at his sport.
Who was the Wyoming farm boy who defeated the best in the world in winning Olympic gold?
Hint

Question 10 of 10
10. Even before the 1980 "Miracle On Ice", Olympic hockey gave us one of the greatest upsets in sports history. Since hockey became an Olympic sport in 1920 Canada had won every Gold Medal so their loss to Great Britain in 1936 stung badly. To make matters worse, how many members of the 13 man British team grew up in Canada? Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The 1991 University of Michigan men's basketball recruiting class is considered by some to be the best class ever recruited together. Four of the five incoming freshmen were McDonald's All Americans and ranked in the top 10 high school players in the nation. Despite such a congregation of talent, this Wolverine class advanced to two NCAA Championship games but lost them both. They're still known by their press-created nickname: the "___ _____".

Answer: Fab Five

The Fab Five (Chris Webber, Jalen Rose, Juwan Howard, Jimmy King and Ray Jackson) advanced to the NCAA Championship game as freshmen in 1992, losing to Duke 71-51 then came in second to North Carolina in 1993, 77-71.
The Five never played together after the '93 loss. Webber entered the NBA that year and all but Ray Jackson eventually followed him to the pros.
2. The University of Houston Cougars were a college basketball team that couldn't quite wrap up an NCAA championship in their three attempts. In 1982 the Cougars lost to North Carolina in the semi-final game, then lost the title games in '83 and '84 to North Carolina State and Georgetown. Nicknamed for their high flying, flamboyant style of play, Houston's basketball "fraternity" is still remembered as ___ ______ _____.

Answer: Phi Slamma Jamma

The dunk shot had been banned by the NCAA from 1967 through 1976. Following its re-introduction to the game, the dunk was primarily used occasionally by big men, but under coach Guy Lewis, the 1981-82 Cougars not only adopted the dunk as their own, but looked for opportunities to slam the ball in what Lewis called "high per-centage shots". Coined by a Houston sportswriter, "Phi Slamma Jamma" appeared on the teams' warmup jackets in 1982.
Six members of these three teams went on to play in the NBA but there were no NCAA championships on their resume.
3. When this player finished the 1992 US Open, Jack Nicklaus left the broadcast booth to congratulate him on his apparent victory. Unfortunately, two players still on the course overcame high winds to finish ahead of him. He won 31 European Tour events and finished second in majors five times including the 1994 and 2006 US Opens. He's a World Golf Hall of Fame member but, alas, no major wins. Who is this 8-time Ryder Cup team member?

Answer: Colin Montgomerie

Ballesteros and Faldo both won majors. Crampton won 42 worldwide tournaments, 14 PGA events. Twice he won the Yardon Trophy for lowest average score on the PGA Tour. He finished second to Jack Nicklaus in four major events but never won one.
4. The list of professional tennis players who've never won a major event contains several surprisingly famous names. Which of these players has won at least one major and is not on that list of unfortunates?

Answer: Andy Murray

Murray carried the "also ran" tag until winning Wimbledon in 2013. Sukova reached four major finals in her career but couldn't win one. Jaeger was ranked as high as #2 during her career but couldn't defeat Martina Navratilova in a couple of major finals. Okker was a consistent high finisher during his career, but lost four major semi-finals.

In his only majors final, he lost to Arthur Ashe in five sets in the 1968 US Open.
5. This team was the first to play in the NFL's Super Bowl four years in a row. Unfortunately for them, they're also the first team to lose the Super Bowl four years in a row. What team holds this "good news/bad news" pair of records?

Answer: Buffalo Bills

The Bills lost Superbowls XXV through XXVIII (1991 to 1994) to the Giants, Redskins and then back-to-back losses to the Cowboys.
6. The 1954 Cleveland Indians broke the American League record for season wins, previously held by the mighty 1927 Yankees with 110 wins. But their 111 regular season wins didn't carry much weight as they were swept in the World Series. What National League team sent the Indians home as also-rans?

Answer: New York Giants

The Indians season wins record stood until the 1998 Yankees won 114 on their way to a World Series win. That record held only until the 2001 Mariners won 116.
7. They were the first nation to play in three World Cup finals without winning. What nation is represented by three time runners up known as the Orange?

Answer: Netherlands

Netherlands won the Euro 2008 (aka as the UEFA European Championship) but has lost three World Cup Finals. Their hopes ended at the hands of West Germany in 1974, Argentina in 1978 and Spain in 2010.

Answer: Carnegie Tech

Following this huge upset, Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie Mellon University) had a decade of success in the 1930s. They peaked in 1938, finishing the season ranked #6 nationally and receiving a bid to the Sugar Bowl before losing there to TCU.

Answer: Rulon Gardner

It appeared that Gardner's strength (which he attributed to doing chores on his family's dairy farm) wore Karelin down causing him to make a couple of mistakes that cost him a fourth Olympic Gold.
Gardner won a world championship in 2001 and bronze in the 2004 Athens Olympics. Karelin retired with a record of 882 wins and only two losses.

Answer: 9

Only one was born in Canada, but two more British players had played in Canada before the Olympics. If you don't think Canada has a long memory for hockey losses, here's a headline from the Calgary Sun in February, 2014: "Team Great Britain made up of traitorous Canadians stole 1936 Olympic gold in hockey from undefeated Team Canada."
