Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who is the gifted striker who scored 10 hat tricks plus one five goal effort during his illustrious Premiership career?

Answer: Alan Shearer

Starting 23 September 1993, Shearer scored 9 hat tricks for Blackburn Rovers, one hat trick for Newcastle United and saving the best for last, on 19 September 1999 he scored five goals for Newcastle United as they thrashed Sheffield Wednesday 8-0.

As we speak (2011/2012 season), this figure is yet to be topped with the closest candidate, Wayne Rooney, stuck on 5 hat tricks and one four goal effort.

Robbie Fowler "only" scored 7 hat tricks and 2 four goal efforts.
Fabulous French striker Thierry Henry scored 7 hat tricks and one four goal effort during his long career with Arsenal.
Ian Wright settled for a mere 5 hat tricks during his Arsenal tenure.
2. These two players scored four goals or more in a single match for two different Premiership sides. From the list below, which two?

Answer: Yakubu Aiyegbeni and Dimitar Berbatov

Two awesome strikers who are still alive and kicking in the 2011/2012 season.

Berbatov scored four goals for Tottenham Hotspur as they defeated Reading 6-4 on 29 December 2007, and five goals for Manchester United as they mowed Blackburn Rovers 7-1 on 27 November 2010. Yakubu left the Premiership for China in the 2012/3 season, but Berbatov finally the transfer he longed for and now plays for Fulham where he may augment his achievement.

Yakubu scored four goals for Portsmouth in their 5-1 victory over Middlesbrough on 15 May 2004, and four goals for Blackburn Rovers as they beat Swansea City 4-2 on 3 December 2011.

All the other players mentioned scored only hat tricks, and only for a single club.
3. My favourite hat trick of all time came on 23 October 1999 at Stamford Bridge. At the 75th minute, Chelsea led comfortably 2-0 against Arsenal, but then came a young Nigerian striker and turned the game upside down scoring three scintillating goals. Who was he?

Answer: Nwankwo Kanu

Oh what a game that was, I recall utter despair turning into sheer joy during those 15 minutes. Kanu scored the winner deep into stoppage time on that rainy day. These were the first goals Chelsea conceded at home on that season, and Kanu's first Premiership hat trick. Unless you are a Chelsea fan, do treat yourself to a few minutes and watch one of the video documentations of this exquisite feat.

The other three players are all Nigerians who scored at least one Premiership hat trick.
4. On 28 August 1994, in a span of under 5 minutes at Anfield, this player tore Arsenal's defense to pieces three times. Who was this demon, aged under 19 when achieving this?

Answer: Robbie Fowler

4 minutes and 32 seconds, to be precise, tucked in between the 26th and the 31st minute of this memorable match, which ended 3-0 to Liverpool.

Both Berger and Owen scored hat tricks for Liverpool, but none as nimble as Fowler. Ole Gunnar Solskjær is mentioned here courtesy of his remarkable four goals in 13 minutes when coming on as a substitute for Manchester United helping them to decimate Nottingham Forest 8-1 away on 6 February 1999.
5. No player of the USA national team has ever scored a Premiership hat trick.

Answer: False

Strangely, this statement would have held true until as late as 20 January 2012. On this date Fulham's talented American midfielder Clint Dempsey netted three times into Newcastle United's goal in a famous 5-2 victory. At the end of this season Dempsey was transferred to Tottenham Hotspur.
6. Who is the striker, that later on became coach of his national team, who never scored a Premiership hat trick, but did score four goals in a match?

Answer: Jürgen Klinsmann (Germany)

Klinsmann scored his four goals on 2 May 1998 when Tottenham Hotspur won away to Wimbledon 6-2. The skilled German equalised in the 41st minute (2-2 HT), and drubbed three more between the 54th and 60th minutes. He coached the German national team after his paying days were over.
7. On 16 November 1996 this former-Leeds United midfielder, playing for Everton at the time, scored his only Premiership hat trick. Who was he?

Answer: Gary Speed (Wales)

RIP Gary Speed. Had a successful start as Wales manager, but on 27 November 2011 he was found hanged in his home. Very sad, nothing more to say.
I would like to bid longevity to the other three hat trick scorers mentioned in the question.
8. On 22 November 2009 at White Hart Lane, Tottenham's Jermain Defoe scored five goals as his team gave no mercy to Wigan Athletic in a 9-1 triumph. What was the score at half-time?

Answer: Tottenham v Wigan 1-0

Defoe's fiver was achieved in full in the second half. I wonder what it felt like in Roberto Martinez halftime team talk for Wigan, that would certainly account for a perfect "Moments from Disaster" episode!
9. Which of the following three players scored hat tricks for three different Premiership clubs?

Answer: All three of them

Teddy Sheringham - Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Portsmouth.
Nicolas Anelka - Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea.
Les Ferdinand - Queens Park Rangers, Tottenham Hotspur and Newcastle United.

Other who have achieved this feat are:
Kevin Campbell - Nottingham Forest, Arsenal and Everton.
Yakubu Aiyegbeni - Portsmouth, Blackburn Rovers and Everton.
10. Top gun Robin van Persie scored a hat trick in his first official match for Arsenal.

Answer: False

That is a strange bit of trivia, because the wonder striker had to wait around 7 years for his first Premiership hat trick which only came on 22 January 2011 in the Gunners' 3-0 home win over Wigan Athletic. Van Persie's opening match for Arsenal was as a substitute in the 2004 Community Shield against Manchester United (3-1), the team to which he was transferred in summer 2012.
