1. All these pitching greats threw over 300 strikeouts in a season except for who?

Answer: Tom Seaver

Seaver, the three-time Cy Young winner had a season high of 289 in 1971 with the Mets. Johnson and Ryan threw 300+ strikeouts six times. Feller reached the 300-plateau only once with the Indians in 1946 with 348.
2. Which of the following was not one of the first five players inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1936?

Answer: Jimmie Foxx

Ty Cobb and Christy Mathewson were the other two that were inducted as the inaugural five. Foxx was inducted in 1951. Jimmie played most of his career with the Athletics and Red Sox, and punched out 534 career home runs. In the 1930s, Foxx won the AL MVP three times and hit for a Triple Crown.
3. Which of these Hall of Fame greats never made it to a World Series?

Answer: Ryne Sandberg

All except for the 1981 season, Ryne was a career Chicago Cub from 1982-1997. He just missed out on a World Series with the 1980 Phillies, and the Cubs had not seen a World Series from 1945 to the end of the century. Killebrew saw his only World Series in 1965 with the Twins, and was credited with a home run. McCovey's only World Series was in 1962 with the Giants in a loss to the Yankees. Mathews apeared in three World Series, two with the Braves and one with the Tigers.

Answer: Connie Mack

Robinson had the organization from 1914-1931 when the team was called the Brooklyn Robins. Alston had the Dodgers in Brooklyn, then moved with the team to Los Angeles in 1958. Lasorda succeeded Alston in 1976. Mack managed the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1894-1896, before taking over the Philadelphia Athletics for 50 seasons and retiring in 1950.

Answer: Reggie Smith

Ruth led the league twice with Boston in 1918 and 1919. Conigliaro led the league by hitting 32 in 1965. Yastrzemski had to of because he hit for a Triple Crown in 1967. Smith played for the Red Sox from 1966-1973. The closest that Reggie came to a home run title was fourth place.
6. Three of these greats all died in 1941. Which of the following stuck around for another 30 years?

Answer: Carl Mays

Mays pitched from 1915-1929. He died on April 4, 1971, at the age of 79. Ironically, Mays caused the first on-field death when he hit the Indians' Ray Chapman in the head with a pitch in 1920. Bond was 80 and Welch 82 when they died. Gehrig died at the young age of 37.
7. Which of these teams did not make a World Series appearance in the 1960s?

Answer: Philadelphia Phillies

The Dodgers and Cardinals went to three World Series in the decade. Baltimore made it to the promised land twice, in 1966 and 1969. The Phillies had not been to a World Series since 1950, and had only appeared in two in their franchise history until 1980 changed it all.

They won their first title against the Kansas City Royals in 1980. In the 1960s, the Yankees led all teams by going to five World Series.

Answer: Roy Campanella

Munson was with the Yankees, McCarver with the Cardinals, and Haller with the Dodgers and Giants. Campanella wore the number 39 for the Dodgers from 1948-1957 until an automobile accident ended his career, and almost his life. He won the NL MVP three times in 1951, 1953, and 1955.
9. Three of these teams were the first three to have a pitcher presented the Cy Young award. Which one was not?

Answer: Houston Astros

The Dodgers had the first Cy Young recepient with Don Newcombe in 1956. He was followed by Warren Spahn of the Braves, then Bob Turley of the Yankees in 1958. The Astros franchise did not begin until 1962, and their first Cy Young winner was Mike Scott in 1986.
10. Which of these Hall of Fame sluggers never hit 50 home runs in a season?

Answer: Stan Musial

The others hit 50+ in a season at least twice in their careers. Amazingly, and even though hitting 475 in his career with the Cardinals, Musial never even reached the 40-mark. His season high was 39 with the Cardinals in 1948, the third of his three MVP seasons.
