Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 2008, Cubs manager Lou Piniella won his third Manager of the Year Award. Who was the runner-up for this National League award?

Answer: Charlie Manuel

Lou won two of the awards with the Seattle Mariners in 1995 and 2001. In 2008, he led the Cubs to their most wins (97) in a season since 1935. Piniella had 15 first place votes to Manuel's eight. Over in the American League, it was the Rays' Joe Maddon who won the Manager of the Year Award, with Ron Gardenhire of the Twins as the runner-up.
2. In which year did Hank Aaron break Babe Ruth's home run record when he hit his 715th career shot?

Answer: 1974

On April 8, Aaron of the Braves met pitcher Al Downing of the Dodgers at Atlanta-Fulton County Stadium. In one pitch, a record was broken that was once deemed unreachable. Hank retired with 755 in his career.
3. The Babe Ruth Award was presented to a player for the first time 1949. Who won this first-ever award?

Answer: Joe Page

The Babe Ruth Award began in 1949, seven years before the World Series MVP Award came about by name, then became that. Yankee pitcher Joe Page won the very-first Babe Ruth Award for his performance in the 1949 World Series against the Brooklyn Dodgers. The first officially named, "World Series MVP", was presented to Johnny Podres of the Dodgers in 1955.
4. Which was the first team in Major League history to top the 4,000,000 home attendance mark in a season?

Answer: Toronto Blue Jays

The Blue Jay organization brought in 4,001,527 fans in 1991. In the team's World Series titles in 1992 and 1993, the team topped the 4,000,000 attendance mark both times also. 1993 also saw the inaugural season of the Colorado Rockies, who shattered Toronto's record with their own home attendance of 4,483,350.
5. Which of the following went through their entire managing career without helming a team that they once played on?

Answer: Earl Weaver

Weaver had the helm of the Baltimore Orioles from 1968-1986. He took the Orioles to four World Series appearances while winning one. Earl never played the game. Mack was the player-manager for the Pittsburgh Pirates from 1894-1896. Houk played for the Yankees from 1947-1954, then took the helm of the team in 1961. Alou both played for and managed the Expos and Giants.
6. In the 2000 season, which team played two different teams in the same day?

Answer: Cleveland Indians

Due to the number of rainouts in the season, and with the season coming to a close, the Indians were forced to play the White Sox in an afternoon game, then return to the field later for a night game against the Twins. They won the first game, then lost the second.
7. Who was the first pitcher to strike out 4000 batters?

Answer: Nolan Ryan

Ryan reached that magic number in 1985 with the Astros. He pitched for the Mets, Angels, Astros, and Rangers throughout his 27-season career. Nolan would go on to fan 5714 batters, a record not likely to be touched. Amongst his many other accomplishments, Ryan threw an amazing seven no-hitters. Ironically, he never won a Cy Young or MVP Award.
8. Who was the first Toronto Blue Jay to win the Cy Young Award?

Answer: Pat Hentgen

Hentgen was the team's inaugural winner in 1996. Pat went 20-10 with 177 strikeouts. He won the award over Andy Pettitte and Mariano Rivera, both of the Yankees. The Blue Jays still finished fourth in the AL East, while the Yankees went all the way to another World Series title in 1996. Clemens won the award for the Jays in 1997 and 1998.
9. Which of the following franchises never changed their team name in the 20th Century?

Answer: Pittsburgh (NL)

Pittsburgh began their National League hopes in 1882 as the Pittsburgh Alleghenys. In 1891, the franchise changed their name to the Pittsburgh Pirates, and the name remained. Boston began the century as the Americans, then changed their name to the Red Sox in 1908. Cleveland began their franchise as the Blues, then Bronchos, Naps, and finally the Indians' name in 1915. Chicago was the Orphans from 1898-1902, then became the Cubs in 1903.
10. In 1974, a record was set for the longest night game in Major League history. The game was between the St. Louis Cardinals and New York Mets. How many innings did the game last?

Answer: 25

The game took seven hours and four minutes at Shea Stadium on September 11. Just over 13,000 fans attended the game. St. Louis used seven pitchers against six for the Mets. Cardinal pitcher Claude Osteen came in relief in the 15th inning, and pitched nine innings thereafter.

The Cardinals' Bake McBride hit a single in the top of the 25th inning, then later scored on an error. The Cardinals won the game 4-3, and the win went to Sonny Siebert for his one inning in relief.
