Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Named captain of the Red Wings at age 21.

Answer: Steve Yzerman

Steve Yzerman became captain prior to the 1986-87 season and wore the "C" for 20 seasons. When he retired he was the longest serving captain in NHL history.
2. Retired as the 7th leading scorer in NHL history.

Answer: Steve Yzerman

He retired with 1,755 points (692 goals). That was the only good enough for second in Red Wings history though, as Gordie Howe tallied 1,809 points in a Wings sweater.
3. Olympic gold medalist

Answer: Both

Lidstrom won his gold in 2006 during the Turin games. Yzerman won his gold four years earlier during the 2002 Salt Lake City games. Lidstrom's team Sweden bested the Finnish team, while Yzerman's team Canada bested the host USA.
4. Four-time Stanley Cup Champion.

Answer: Nicklas Lidstrom

Yzerman and Lidstrom each won the cup in 1997, 1998 and 2002. Lidstrom also won the cup in 2008.
5. At more than 40 years old he was the oldest player in league history to record a first career hat trick in 2010.

Answer: Nicklas Lidstrom

Nicklas Lidstrom played primarily as a defenseman and rarely scored multiple goals in his career. On Dec. 15, 2010 he finally scored his first hat trick, during his 19th season. He scored only 16 goals in 82 games played that season. Lidstrom retired with 264 goals over 20 seasons.
6. Won the Norris Memorial Trophy seven times in his career.

Answer: Nicklas Lidstrom

The Norris Memorial Trophy was presented to the best defenseman on the league. Yzerman never played defenseman enough to qualify for any season-awards at that position. Lidstrom won the title seven times, including in his penultimate season at age 40. Only Bobby Orr had won more at the time Lidstrom retired. Orr won his eight consecutively from 1967-68 to 1974-75.

Lidstrom won the trophy in 2000-01 to 2002-03, 2005-06 to 2008-09 and for the 2010-11 season. The trophy was not awarded in 2004-05 due to a season lockout or Lidstrom might have had an eighth title to tie the record. All but two players who won the award through the 2007-08 season were elected to the hockey Hall of Fame.

During his time on the Wings, Lidstrom was often paired with Paul Coffey or Chris Chelios, who each won the trophy three times as well. (Coffey only one once as a Red Wing, all three of Chelios' wins came before he was traded to the Red Wings.)
7. Member of the Triple Gold Club

Answer: Nicklas Lidstrom

The Triple Gold Club is an informal club that enshrines players who win the Stanley Cup, Olympic gold medal and the World Championship.

Yzerman never was on a World Championship team. Lidstrom was on the Swedish World Championship team in 1991, and won the Olympics in 2006. He won Stanley Cups in 1997, 1998, 2002 and 2008.
8. Elected to the Hockey Hall of Fame.

Answer: Both

Yzerman was enshrined in 2009, Lidstrom in 2015. Both men were elected to the Hall of Fame on their first attempt, three years after retiring.
9. Played 22 seasons and 1,514 games in the NHL.

Answer: Steve Yzerman

Lidstrom played 20 seasons but 1,564 games. Yzerman played his first NHL game at age 18, Lidstrom at 21. Yzerman retired at 40, Lidstrom at 41.
10. Set record as the youngest person to play in the NHL All-Star game.

Answer: Steve Yzerman

Yzerman was 18 years, 8 months and 22 days old when he played in the 1984 game. His record stood until 2011 when Jeff Skinner at 18 years 8 months and 14 days just bested him.
