Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Led MLB in home runs 11 times

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth retired with 714 career home runs. At the time he had the career and single season (60) marks. He was the American League league leader 12 times, in 1930 Hack Wilson had one more than him in the National League.
2. Pitched two complete games in the World Series

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth started his career in Boston as a pitcher, and was dominant. He pitched a complete 14-inning game in 1916, giving up a single run, and in 1918 he pitched two World Series games. In all he pitched 31 innings in the series and gave up just three runs.

Ruth pitched significantly from 1914-1919, and from there tailed off to mostly a position player. He pitched only five games the rest of his career after 1919. In all he posted 94 pitching wins in the regular season.
3. Took three years off in the middle of career to serve in the Air Force

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

DiMaggio chose to enlist during the off-season in 1943. He served nearly three years and was later discharged due to medical reasons.

He played seven seasons before his service and six seasons after.
4. Two time All-Star

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth, who was arguably the best player in the game for most of his 22-year career, was only a two-time All-Star because the first game wasn't played until 1933. Ruth was an All-Star in '33 and '34, and retired in 1935 after playing only a few games with the Boston Braves.

Ruth hit the first home run in All-Star game history, blasting a two-run shot off Bill Hallahan to put the American League up 3-0 in the third inning of the game. Ruth's team eventually won 4-2.
5. Seven-time World Series champion

Answer: Babe Ruth

Ruth won the World Series in 1915, 1916, 1918, 1923, 1927, 1928 and 1932. He played in three others that he was on the losing side of.
6. Achieved a 56-game hitting streak

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

In 1941 Joe DiMaggio started a streak that wouldn't be rivaled for decades. He started the streak on May 15 and ended on July 17. During the streak he had 15 home runs and hit .408. He also had a hit in the All-Star game, but that didn't count in the streak.

The only streak that started to rival DiMaggio's for the rest of the 20th century was Pete Rose, who hit safely in 44 games in 1978.
7. Two-time American League batting champion

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Ruth won the batting crown in 1924, DiMaggio won the title in 1939 and '40. DiMaggio was also a three-time AL MVP, to Ruth's single MVP title.
8. Featured on the cover of the first ever SPORT magazine along with his son

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

SPORT was published from September 1946 to August 2000. DiMaggio was the cover star of the first issue, which was more than a decade after Ruth retired.

SPORT was the first nationally published sports-only magazine, predating Sports Illustrated by eight years.
9. Had jersey number retired by the Florida Marlins`

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

Neither Ruth nor DiMaggio ever played for the Marlins as the team didn't exist until 1993. DiMaggio was the favorite player of the team's first ever president Carl Berger.

Berger died before the team took the field for the first time. In honor of Berger, the team retired DiMaggio's number since Berger didn't have one himself.
10. Elected to the Hall of Fame during the inaugural class

Answer: Babe Ruth

Both were elected to the Hall of Fame, but Ruth was elected in 1936. The other 1936 entrants were Ty Cobb, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson and Walter Johnson.

DiMaggio was inducted in 1955.
