Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The participating teams were placed in 4 groups, from which the winner qualified for the second and final round. Which of the following is NOT true regarding Group D?

Answer: The group winner was European.

Group D was played out between Uruguay and Bolivia (in view of the fact that Scotland and Turkey withdrew). Uruguay won the only Group D match by 8-0 and qualified for the final round.
2. Where was the first game of the tournament played?

Answer: Rio de Janeiro

The inaugural match between Brazil and Mexico, was played in the famous Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Brazil won 4-0.
3. Group A was won as anticipated by Brazil. The Brazilians won two of their three games. What was the outcome of their other match?

Answer: A draw (2-2) against Switzerland

This draw came as a shock for Brazil. Only three days before, the Swiss lost 0-3 against Yugoslavia. Thus, Brazil was forced to beat Yugoslavia in order to finish in first place, and qualify to the final round. For the record, Brazil won 2-0.
4. England's World Cup debut was in Group B. Their opponents were Spain, Chile and the USA. How did they fare in their first match?

Answer: They beat Chile (2-0).

England scored a goal in each half (Mortensen and Mannion). At the time, little did they know that this was to be their only victory of the tournament. Subsequently they lost to the USA and Spain, with identical scores of 0-1.
5. What was so special about the Group C match between Sweden and Italy?

Answer: It was the first defeat conceded by the reigning champions.

In 1934, Uruguay (who were the reigning Champions) did not participate in that year's edition, therefore technically, they were not defeated. In 1938, reigning champions Italy successfully defended their title with four wins out of four attempts.
6. The final round consisted of six group matches, between the four countries that had qualified from Round 1. How many goals did Brazil score in their first two matches of this round?

Answer: Thirteen

In the second round, Brazil embarked on an initial goal-scoring spree. They flattened Sweden (7-1) and Spain (6-1). On the other hand, Uruguay managed only a draw against Spain (2-2) and a narrow win against Sweden (3-2).
7. Who scored Uruguay's winning goal against Brazil on the 16th of July, 1950?

Answer: Ghiggia

In the 61st minute of the final game, with the score set at 1-1, Ghiggia scored to put Uruguay in the lead against Brazil, to the shock of the majority of the (circa) 200,000 watching the game at the Maracana Stadium.
8. Which country was the only one to fail to score a goal in the 1950 tournament?

Answer: Bolivia

Bolivia had little chance to score a goal in the tournament. They only played one game, and this was against the eventual World Cup Winners. The eight goal difference (0-8)is proof of the disparity that existed between both sides.
9. Ademir (of Brazil) finished top scorer with 7 goals. In which game did he manage to score the highest amount of goals?

Answer: Against Sweden - four goals

Ademir excelled in the second round match between Brazil and Sweden. He scored four times, making the score 1-0, 2-0, 4-0 and 5-0 respectively. Not surprisingly, Brazil won the game (7-1).
10. Which of the following statements regarding the 1950 World Cup is true?

Answer: It was the only edition in which there was no World Cup Final.

The elimination of the knock-out system meant that Brazil would have won the tournament with a draw against Uruguay. The other statements are incorrect: In 1930 Europeans were also outnumbered (4 to 9). The highest goal-scoring average was achieved in 1954 (5.38 per game). The low number of participants (13) was also attained in 1930.
