Seoul beat out Nagoya by twenty-five votes to host the games of the XXIV Olympiad. Also at the 84th IOC Session the 1988 Winter Games were decided, Calgary, Canada was the winning bid for the 1988 Winter games.

The 1988 Summer Games lasted from September 17 to October 2, 1988. A total of 8,391 athletes competed for 160 countries in 263 different events.

Florence beat the record twice while competing in the 100 meters. The first time she beat the Olympic record her time was 10.88 seconds. and then final time she beat it she got a time of 10.62 sec. Before the 1988 Summer Games, Florence also set the World Record in the 100 meters, her time then was 10.49 sec. Florence did win gold in the women's 100 meters.

She also won the women's 200 meters and the women's 4 x 100 meter relay. Florence Griffith-Joyner competed for the United States.

Ben was then stripped of his old and newly set world record times and his gold medal.

The second place finisher, Carl Lewis, was then awarded the gold medal. The world record and Olympic record was set at 9.92 seconds, Carl's time in the final. Carl competed for the United States.
