Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This slugger was the first Yankee to win an American League batting title.

Answer: Babe Ruth

The Babe batted .376 in 1920, .378 in 1921, and .393 in 1923 but it still wasn't good enough to win the AL batting title. In 1924 he batted another .378 to finally win it over Charlie Jamieson of the Cleveland Indians with his own .359 average. That would be Ruth's only batting title in his entire career.

The next Yankee to hit over .380 in a season was the great Joe DiMaggio when he hit .381 in 1939 giving 'Joltin Joe' his first AL MVP Award.
2. He was the first Yankee pitcher to win a World Series game.

Answer: Carl Mays

It was October 5, 1921, when the Yankees finally went to the big top. They were hosted by the New York Giants at the Polo Grounds in game one and Mays struck out only one Giant in a 3-0 shutout. The Giants went on to win the series five games to three. Mays would go on to be recognized in a very negative way by hitting Cleveland Indian shortstop Ray Chapman with a pitch in 1920. Chapman died shortly afterwards.
3. He was the first player to hit 20 total home runs for the franchise.

Answer: Hal Chase

Chase was a New York Highlander from 1905-1913, then played an additional six seasons for various teams. With New York he hit a season-high of four home runs in 1912 and 20 overall for the Highlanders. Hal led the National League in hits and batting in 1916 with the Reds. He retired in 1919 with a total of 57 home runs. Chase died in 1947 at the age of 64.
4. He was the first pitcher for the franchise to win the Cy Young Award.

Answer: Bob Turley

The Cy Young Award began in 1956 in honor of the great Cy Young who died in 1955. Dodger Don Newcombe was the first recipient of the award. Turley was the third recipient of the award after Newcombe and Milwaukee Brave pitcher Warren Spahn to win the award in 1958. Bob went 21-7 and also finished second in the AL MVP voting behind Jackie Jensen of the Boston Red Sox. Turley led the league also in the season with 128 walks, his third season of leading the league.

He retired in 1963 with a 105-85 career record.
5. This pitcher was the first to win more than 25 games in a season.

Answer: Jack Chesbro

Chesbro joined the Highlanders in 1903 after four seasons in the NL with the Pittsburgh Pirates. His best season as a Pirate was a 28-6 record in 1902. In 1904 Jack went 41-12 and led the AL in games, games started, games completed, and innings pitched. Chesbro retired after 11 seasons in 1909.

He had a career record of 198-132. Jack died in 1931 and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1947. The next franchise pitcher to win more than 25 games in a season was Al Orth who went 27-17 in 1906, then Carl Mays who won 26 in 1920.
6. This pitcher stood on the mound for the team in 11 different World Series.

Answer: Whitey Ford

Edward Charles 'Whitey' Ford was a career Yankee from 1950-1967. He missed two seasons to the Korean War. Whitey won the Cy Young Award in 1961 in a stellar season for him and the entire team. Appearing in 11 World Series he had an overall record of 10-8 with a career record of 236-106. Whitey and the Yankees won six of those World Series. Ford was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1974.
7. He was the first Yankee to win the American League MVP Award three times.

Answer: Joe DiMaggio

The great 'Yankee Clipper' was a career Yankee from 1936-1951 while losing three seasons to WWII. In his 13 seasons, he won the MVP in 1939, 1941, and 1947. Joe was also the runner-up for the MVP in 1938 to Charlie Gehringer of the Tigers, and in 1948 to Lou Boudreau of the Indians.

He also won the 1940 batting title. The 1941 season was when DiMaggio had his 56-game hitting streak while finishing the season with 193 hits.
8. This Yankee pitcher was the first to win a season strikeout crown.

Answer: Red Ruffing

Ruffing played for 22 seasons from 1924-1947. Red's 190 strikeouts in 1932 stopped Lefty Grove of the Philadelphia Athletics from gaining his eighth consecutive American League strikeout title when Grove threw 188 strikeouts in the season. It was Red's only strikeout crown. Ruffing was a 20-game winner four times with the Yankees from 1936-1939.

He went to seven World Series with the Yankees and had a series pitching record of 7-2. He found himself with a career record of 273-225 when he retired with the Chicago White Sox. Red was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1967.
9. He was first Yankee manager to have his jersey number retired.

Answer: Casey Stengel

Charles Dillon 'Casey' Stengel was an outfielder from 1912-1925. He had the reins of the Brooklyn Dodgers from 1934-1936, then took over the Boston Bees/Braves from 1938-1943. He became the head pinstriper with the Yankees in 12 seasons from 1949-1960. What a tremendous run for Casey and the Yankees as they won 10 American League pennants and seven World Series under his tenure. Casey went to the Mets in 1962 for four seasons and watched the Mets lose over 100 games in each season.

His number 37 was retired on August 8, 1970. Billy Martin was the next Yankee manager to have his number 1 retired in 1986.
10. This Yankee won the World Series MVP Award even with his Yankees losing the series.

Answer: Bobby Richardson

The 1960 World Series pitted the Yankees against the Pittsburgh Pirates. The Pirates won the series four games to three but not before Richardson had six singles, two doubles, two triples, a home run, and 12 RBIs for a new World Series record. The Yankees compiled 55 runs in the series to 27 for the Pirates. Pittsburgh's Harvey Haddix and Vernon Law won two games each for the Pirates. Yankee Whitey Ford pitched a 12-0 shutout in game six.
