1. Who was the first Red Sox player to break the .375 batting average in a season?

Answer: Tris Speaker

Although Williams set a team record with a .406 in 1941, Speaker was the first to break the .375 plateau, by hitting .383 in 1912. Speaker had his highest career season total in that year by hammering out 222 hits for Boston. He helped the Red Sox gain a World Series crown by beating the New York Giants.

Answer: Boston Pilgrims

The club were the Americans in 1901, the Somersets in 1902, and then the Pilgrims from 1903-1906. The team became the Red Sox in 1907. The Pilgrims won their first World Series in the Pilgrims' name in 1903, by defeating the Pirates 5 games to 3. The Pilgrims were managed by Jimmy Collins who also played third base, and led by the great Cy Young who went 28-9.

Huntington Avenue Grounds were the home of the Boston Americans in 1901. The Red Sox inherited the ballpark through the franchise when they became the Red Sox in 1907. After gaining the Red Sox name in 1907, they won their first World Series in 1912. They were under the helm of Jake Stahl with a season record of 105-47. It was the first time in franchise history that Boston had reached the 100-win mark in a season. They beat the New York Giants in the World Series in 8 games. (They had won the World Series in 1903, as the Boston Pilgrims)
