Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When Dallas Cowboy fullback Daryl Johnston would take the field, the stands would erupt with cries from the fans who were yelling which of the following things?

Answer: Moose

Daryl "Moose" Johnston was a fan favorite who played on the Dallas Cowboys from 1989-1999. Whenever his name was announced or he made a play, the crowds would start chanting "Mooooose". In 1993 Johnston became the first fullback ever selected for the Pro Bowl.

After a neck injury prematurely ended his career, Johnston went onto a career as a popular sportscaster. He is the proud owner of three Super Bowl rings.
2. "Broadway Joe" is the nickname used for San Francisco 49er's quarterback Joe Montana.

Answer: False

"Broadway Joe" was the nickname for quarterback Joe Namath not Joe Montana. Montana was known as "Joe Cool" and "The Comeback Kid" for his demeanor and style of play. Joe Namath was called "Broadway Joe" and sometimes "Joe Willie". He played from 1965-1976 with the New York Jets.

He played his final year with the Los Angeles Rams in 1977. He was a flamboyant leader who lead his underdog team to a championship in Super Bowl III. He had a powerful arm and was the first quarterback to throw for over 4,000 yards in one season (1967).
3. Sweetness was the nickname for which of the following Hall of Fame running backs?

Answer: Walter Payton

Walter Payton is considered by most to be one of the greatest running backs to ever play in the NFL. Don't let this nickname confuse you, there was nothing sweet about his style of play. He was one of the hardest running players to ever play the game.

He played his entire career for the Chicago bears in a career that lasted from 1975 until 1987. He was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1993.
4. NFL quarterback Kordell Stewart was known by which of the following nicknames?

Answer: Slash

Kordell "Slash" Stewart played most of his 10 year career for the Pittsburgh Steelers. One of the most versatile players in the game, he got his nickname from the fact that he could play quarterback/running back/wide receiver/punter/and kick returner. Notice the slashes in this list? He was an exciting quarterback to watch play as he had some of the best feet ever seen on a quarterback.

When he retired he had the second most rushing touchdowns by a quarterback with 38 and the record for the longest touchdown run by a quarterback (80 yds).
5. Which of the following defensive backs was known as "Night Train"?

Answer: Dick Lane

Dick "Night Train" Lane was a premier defensive back from 1952-1965. This Korean War veteran was one of the most feared defenders in the NFL while he played. In his rookie season he had 14 interceptions, setting a record that stood for over 60 years. He played for the Los Angeles Rams, the Chicago cardinals and Detroit Lions.

Inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1974, Dick Lane is still considered by many to have been one of the best defensive men to ever play the game.
6. Which one of these NFL quarterbacks was known as "The Gunslinger"?

Answer: Brett Favre

Love him or hate him, most people acknowledge that Brett Favre was one of the toughest quarterbacks to ever play the game. In a career that stretched from 1991-2010, "The Gunslinger" racked up numerous records, some of which may never be broken. At the time of his retirement he was the only quarterback to have thrown for over 70,000 yds. and have over 500 touchdowns.

He was known for playing while injured, resulting in his record streak of starting 297 games in a row.
7. Chicago Bears defensive tackle William Perry was known by which of the following monikers?

Answer: Refrigerator

William "Refrigerator" Perry played most of his career (1985-1994) in Chicago where he was a member of the team that won Super Bowl XX in 1986. Despite his large size, 6'2" (1.88 m) and 335 lbs. (152 kg), Perry was a gifted athlete that excelled in football, basketball and diving.

These skills earned him a full scholarship to Clemson University where his abilities were recognized, and where he earned his nickname. After his NFL career was over he made several television appearances, did some sports casting and participated in professional wrestling for a short period of time.
8. What was the nickname of running back/wide receiver Elroy Hirsch?

Answer: Crazylegs

Elroy "Crazylegs" Hirsch was a very talented athlete who played in the NFL from 1946-1957. He was both a running back and a wide receiver. He received his nickname from sportswriter Francis Powers who stated in an addition of the Chicago Daily News that "His crazy legs were gyrating in six different directions, all at the same time; he looked like a demented duck." He was a utility player that was able to play many positions.

He was elected into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1968 and went on to serve as the Director of Athletics for the University of Wisconsin-Madison for 18 years.

The college has an annual fund-raising race, which is named the "Crazylegs Classic" in his honor.
9. Ed Lee Jones who played 15 years for the Dallas Cowboys was known by this somewhat unusual nickname?

Answer: Too Tall

Ed "Too Tall" Jones was a defensive end for the Dallas Cowboys and won his only Super Bowl ring in the Cowboys' 1978 win over the Denver Broncos. At 6'9" (2.06m) and 271 lbs. (123 kg), Jones looked more like a basketball player, hence his nickname. Jones was an amazing all-around athlete playing baseball and basketball in high school as well as boxing.

In the middle of his football career, he became a professional heavyweight boxer, winning five fights by knockout before going back to football. When he retired at the end of the 1989 season, he had never missed a game and held the record for the most games played by a Cowboy.
10. Running back Craig Heyward was popularly known as "Rockhead".

Answer: False

Running back Craig Heyward was known as "Ironhead" not "Rockhead". In his 11 year NFL career, he played for five different teams and was known for hard- hitting style of running and for his very large head (his hat size was 8 3/4). He was a hard runner with surprising quickness. Sadly he was diagnosed with bone cancer at the base of his skull at the age of 32 and passed away from the disease at the young age of 39.
