Dorothy says these words at the beginning of the episode, after returning home with Rose, having been Christmas shopping. Ever the annoying optimist, upon arriving home Rose asks exuberantly, "Didn't you have the best time Christmas shopping today?", which prompts a dour Dorothy to respond with the quote outlined in the question. Dorothy then goes on to explain that her gloominess is due to the fact that Christmas no longer has any meaning any more.

When Dorothy discovers that Sophia has stolen her credit card in order to splash out on Christmas gifts, she responds by bemoaning the loss of the true meaning of Christmas. However Sophia doesn't seem to see things the same way as her daughter, and in addition to mentioning Neiman Marcus she also tells her to "loosen up the mouse trap a little" as "it's Christmas".

This hilarious quote of Dorothy's comes relatively early on in the episode, when the girls are in the middle of opening their Christmas presents, which they made for each other. Dorothy initially thinks that Rose's gift to her is "a wooden brooch in the shape of a turkey's head", but eventually learns that it is actually a maple syrup spigot. Dorothy then utters the quotation mentioned in the question.

While this is going on, Sophia is revelling in Dorothy's bemusement, and tells her daughter that Rose was originally going to give her a pair of pearl earrings.

Blanche's Christmas gift to Dorothy, Rose and Sophia is a calendar entitled The Men of Blanche's Boudoir. It is made up of pictures of Blanche's past conquests, men who (in Blanche's own words) have "brought special joy into" her life. Though initially taken aback by the graphic nature of Blanche's gift, Dorothy does keep sneaking peeks at it.

Though Dorothy, Sophia and Blanche are all free to do as they please on Christmas Eve, poor Rose has to work at the crisis centre. One of her clients also proves to be having a particularly upsetting Christmas, and claims to have lost his job, wife, girlfriend, house, car and money all in the same week.

He then tops this off with the declaration that "just today I've seriously gotten into playing with matches". When Rose then informs him he is going to have to speak with a professional, he promptly takes a seat in the waiting room. Moments later, Dorothy and Blanche arrive to pick up Rose and take her to the airport, but things don't quite go as planned.

Answer: A big storm prevents all airplanes from flying out of Miami

Midway through this episode the girls are taken hostage at the crisis centre where Rose works, just as they are about to leave together to go to the airport. The hostage taker is a lonely man dressed in a Santa suit, who claims to be sick and tired of spending the holidays alone. Armed with a gun he tries to ensure that nobody can leave, and explains that the only reason he has a gun in the first place is to force people to stay. Nevertheless it is not actually this situation that prevents the women from flying home to their respective families. Rather it is the weather, for as they arrive at the airport they discover that all flights have been cancelled due to a severe storm.

As Dorothy, Blanche and Rose are inside the crisis centre trying to think of a way to escape the hostage taker, Sophia enters the building after getting sick of waiting alone in the car for the girls to return. Horrified, Dorothy quickly orders her mother out of the way, adding "He's got a gun!" However a calm Sophia takes one look at the man's weapon and promptly takes it off him, before then uttering the words mentioned in the question.

At the very end of this episode the girls find themselves in a small Miami diner, where they are the only customers. Though they are initially miserable, the owner of the diner soon cheers them up by mentioning that he thought they were all related "for sure".

As it is Christmas he also gives each of them a free slice of cheesecake to have with their coffee. The girls then realise how lucky they are to be spending the holidays together, and tell the man that they will look after his diner for him so he can spend Christmas Eve with his family.

In the dying moments of the episode, Sophia then notices that it has started to snow.
