Paul came to the dance as a chaperon, presumably, to find out how much Susan knew about Dana's death. The truth was that Susan knew nothing. She'd eavesdropped on Julie and Zach's phone call enough to know that Julie as keeping a secret for Zach, but that was all Susan really heard. So, when the pair started dancing, it was Susan who began the fishing.

She offered she'd overheard the kids talking, and that she heard the entire secret. So, Paul actually gave up the entire secret. He said that Zach had accidentally killed Dana, and that he and Mary Alice had never really known exactly what happened.

He asked Susan to keep the information to herself.

On the way home from the dance, Paul told Zach that Dana was actually still alive. When Zach asked why his dad was revealing this fact now, Paul said he just couldn't let Zach go on thinking he'd killed someone. Zach found the entire revelation bogus.

He knew his dad was making an attempt to keep Zach quiet. So, Zach agreed to remain quiet if they could stay in town. Their house was sold, and Paul initially refused to agree, but Zach knew his dad would do what he wanted. Zach was one creepy teenager.
