Though old man Twickam had been on his deathbed for the last twenty years, he really did die this time. He died right after he saw Lorelai. So, when Taylor is asked for help with Twickam's request during the town meeting and Luke offered his, he thought Luke was just being mean. Luke never offered to help Taylor, which also peaked Lorelai's curiosity. So, Luke told her he that he felt guilty and then told Taylor the reason was because he wanted to make things up to Lorelai. Finally, at the end he admitted the real truth to Taylor. Luke wanted Twickam's house after the two months are up and Taylor can sell it to him. So, he sucked up to Taylor in order to have a chance at the house he believes is the perfect house for a family.

This shows that Luke is definitely interested in marrying Lorelai.

Taylor's sweatshirt was a dark orange color, and the helpers had light orange ones that read Stars Hollow Museum Crew Member. When Luke had finally convinced Taylor he was serious about helping out, Taylor was so excited he made Luke his right hand man.
