Back on the island in scenes in the present, Sawyer went to go look for Desmond, who was at the bottom of a well, and he was confronted by Ben and the "Man in Black" (John Locke) on his way there. While he spoke to both of them, Locke informed him of his plan to completely blow up the island. Sawyer then took Ben's gun and ran off to find Jack, Kate and Hugo to inform them of Locke's plans.

Desmond was still in the well when he saw above that Rose and Bernard were there to rescue him. They rescued him but then Locke confronted all three of them. Locke demanded that Desmond come with him or else he would kill Rose and Bernard so Desmond reluctantly agreed to go with Locke. However, Desmond did ask Locke that he not harm Bernard and Rose.

Later on in the episode, Kate and Sawyer went to Hydra Island by using Desmond's boat which he called "Elizabeth" and they went to the site where a plane was. They noticed that Frank, Richard and Miles were working on the plane to see if they could get it airborne and escape the island. Lapidus managed to get the plane working again and able to fly off the island.

Jack went to a place called the heart of the island and it was while he was there that he became seriously injured. When he got outside the heart of the island, he collapsed to the ground and Vincent, Walt's dog, laid down right next to him. While Jack and Vincent were down on the ground, they noticed the airplane flying over them and then Jack died.
